We went in to our Indian grocery store to buy some asafetida, and the guy at the counter was like "what the hell is that?" He called some other guy over to help try to figure out what it might be, and while we were waiting, told us this story about some other people who came in asking for some weird name and it wound up being this thing he had right there. The other guy heard me say it and said "hing" then turned around. And that was what the guy was telling us the story about.

Some people call that spice "hing". Now I know.

yeah hing is the hindi word, asafetida is the latinate word and it basically means "nasty plant"

word of advice for asafetida, if you want things in your house to smell like themselves and not asafetida, put the container in a sealed ziploc bag and then put that ziploc bag in another airtight container like a mason jar. basically as soon as i crack the band on the jar it smells like weird onions in like a 20 foot radius. powerful stuff

learning how to wire joysticks and buttons is very simple and a perfect my first electronics project

im planning on moving this summer so hauling this cab is gonna be a hoot, poo poo takes up a ton of room but screw it arcade games rule

today carrots wouldn't get soft in the oven, so i did a test where i brought it up to temp and let it sit for a while then checked the temp inside with one of those lazer thermometers and what was supposed to be 425c was actually somewhere around 200.

hmm I have never tried to replace a bake element but it sounds like it should be reasonably straightforward (assuming you have an electric oven). whatever you end up doing I hope you have it fixed soon!

Opening with a post about french fries was a pro move.

I used the oscillating tool to cut apart an under-table shelf housing that was nailed together, and turned our kitchen prep table into a pretty nice workstation for Ms Cruft's schoolwork! We had to order a taller chair too.

It feels really great to repurpose stuff instead of freecycling and buying a new one. Plus, this table is solid wood, so it should hold the monitor arm no problem. And when she graduates, i can probably use some brackets to get that drawer back on!

Oscillating tools are frickin awesome. Every homeowner should have one, IMO.

Awesome. So re: poutine- I have found that the curd matters a ton, but probably not as much as the spuds. I used to live near this fromagerie and they had this garlic curd that was bomb with poutine

Is there good vegan poutine? We tried a couple when we were in Montréal, but they were all pretty wacky flavors like mint or something.

alnilam

Poutine is like coffee or pizza, even lovely poutine is still great but great poutine is amazing

cruft

Yeah, the vegan poutine was pretty good, but the non-vegan stuff was better.

We have a sort of poutine here in New Mexico called Green Chile Cheese Fries. It's exactly what you'd think, if you know what New Mexico Green Chile sauce is like.

God drat it now I'm hungry. I just brushed my teeth!

If you come here to california and try our poutine, I don't think you'll be holding that opinion for long.

I've had Montreal poutine and it was wonderful. Probably ordered it at every bar I went to. And there was a TGI Friday's style quebec restaurant that had a whole page on gimmicky poutine and it was still good.

I've yet to find good poutine here in southern california. But most pizza places have pineapple so I've never really been to a bad pizza place. Except for Pizza Hut. And costco would be better if they had hawaiian pizza.

sb hermit

the only bad coffee I have is what I make myself, because I'm too stingy with the coffee grounds, or the coffee maker isn't hot enough. Also, the grounds are probably too old. But I still use them because I can't waste coffee.

sb hermit

thank you, thread, for reminding me to descale the coffee maker

I've gotten into instant coffee recently. You can get pretty decent instant, it just costs mere than Folger's Crystals (which tastes a lot like rear end).

If I'm not mistaken, the most popular type of coffee in Colombia is instant. And it also uses less water to get from the plant into your cup, somehow.

So give instant another chance! You might like it!
