It could be national memory of the cold war where America would have totally thrown Germany under the bus to the Russians if it came to that. Personally I'm surprised Germany wouldn't want to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian purely out of remembering that.

Millions of middle class people are relying on their 401ks and/or pension plans (including millions of Americans in unions) tied up in the market for their retirements. Wishing the market to tank when suicides go up by tens of thousands a year when the market tanks is royally hosed up.

It's never going to be the bloody nose you think it will for the rich and wealthy.

I forget which comedian it was after 2008 had a bit about formerly wealthy people who had been reduced to a middle class lifestyle killing themselves, “they’d rather die than live like us.”

Does it? I never noticed but we had superstitions while playing, like bear meat makes you sick. I was also playing before I understood measurements so didn’t realize risking a 20ft deep river fording wasn’t a matter of luck. That would be an interesting scene in a movie, a single wagon disappearing below the waves to dodge a $5 ferry toll.

A friend’s dad had been one of the original developers and they never realized until later how nearly everyone was familiar with the game.

The stock market going down no longer hurts the mega rich and corporations. The massive gains since 2008 have mostly been corporations and CEOs buying back shares from shareholders to insulate themselves so when the bottom finally does drop out, the only casualties will be what's left of the middle class.

Then we can have Neo-Feudalism and referring to Elon and JeffyB as anything other than STAR LORD MUSK and BOX LORD BEZOS will be punishable by the lash - and loss of Prime status.

I recall that the equation for the speed of the wagon is nonsensical, in that if you attach maximum oxen to a light wagon and set “gruelling pace”, the wagon goes far faster than any animal has a right to.

Gruelling pace takes its toll on your team, but the negative effects happen on a per‐day basis, and you’re covering so much ground per day that you still come out ahead.

The market crashing to dust would just be the rich people putting the poors in their place. That's exactly why the system is like it is. Well, that and boomers increasingly marching towards fascism.

If we really gave a gently caress as a country we would have shot down the march to stuffing everyone's money in the markets a long time ago, and passed laws to ensure people had pensions, or that businesses wouldn't pay their CEOs 100x more than their employees. If Bezos shut down amazon tomorrow, who would it hurt more? Him? Or the people who have to settle for his working conditions? The customers? The stockholders?

If the stock market collapsed tomorrow, entirely, the only people unscathed would be the rich. Just how they like it. Free market!
