I've been playing Banjo Kazooie and it's as great as I remember! Nowadays I recognize Mario 64 as the superior game but BK has a lushness to it that made it my favorite back in the day. It's impressive what Rare was able to do with the very limited hardware.

Banjo Tooie was begging to be a Gamecube game but iirc it was already extremely delayed when it came out towards the end of the N64's life. It has some absolutely massive levels and a weird metroidvania backtrack aspect between some of them which makes it seem a lot more daunting than it is. It also has a lot of needless bloat (FPS sections???) and runs like absolute dogshit. I appreciate it for what it is and what it attempts but to me Banjo Kazooie is like the platonic ideal of 3D collectathons, perfect length and amount of stuff to collect. Those are my Banjo Kazooie opinions, thank you.

I remember being blown away how big a step up graphically BK was over Mario 64, already absolutely top tier graphics for the time. I couldn't tell you which one looked better nowadays they both look so dated. Moore's law rules.

The roster of Pokémon is so bloated at this point, they wouldn’t need to animate so many Pokémon if they hadn’t added in so many filler Pokémon over the years. I’m sure that every Pokémon is someone’s favorite, but there are exponentially more people who would use a Pokémon like Infernape vs something like Stantler or whatever. They should just animate the popular Pokémon first and then never animate the unpopular filler types.

There is a real problem here in that with X/Y GameFreak looked like they deliberately over-engineered the models so they could reuse them for later games, but just never built on that with animation sets over time.

The other side of that coin however is that very few Pokemon share armatures (ie; animation skeletons), so they can't just brute-force a shared pool of animations between Pokemon the way you see in, say, a Tales or Final Fantasy game where you have multiple different-coloured variants of the same enemy model. Every pokemon's gotta be animated individually, and there are a LOT of the drat things.

From what I’ve heard pretty much, yeah (it’s a tad more open than your standard Pokémon game but there are still roadblocks that prevent you from exploring further until you’ve completed a certain in-game task like normal).

Why do people keep saying this like they were rival games? Banjo-Kazooie came out two years later, and only exists because of Mario 64.

I just played Diamond and found it pretty boring. I expected to love it because I loved the DS version, but it just wasn’t the same. The always on exp share makes it incredibly easy, I was constantly 10 levels above my opponents.

I like the idea of the exp share overall but they didn’t balance it well this time around.

For the first map at least the roadblocks are basically non-existent. Once you get through the tutorials you can go anywhere and the badge equivalents that let you control higher level Pokemon are separate from the story missions. You can easily be 20 levels higher than the first story boss if you just ignore the quest marker and go around catching pokemon.
