mayan civilization, though I wouldn't be surprised if there are some modern creations getting sold as antiquities. many of the most spectacular eccentrics specifically have the face with head-dress (headdress that looks a lot like a bird of prey, to me, but idk the precise imagery it is meant to be, apparently kawiil? who would contextually make sense given that many have a tang for mounting on a handle) and many include the body and arms. The one that looks like a canoe with 3 people in it is one of the only ones i've seen that looks like an actual full scene, but i am anything but an expert in these things. that said, there are apparently quite a few of the things turning up, in various degrees of elaborateness, so presumably they were an at least somewhat common/widely used ritual item or something. Also they turn up in all kinds of different forms beyond just the figures. some of which makes sense just on the grounds that it's fun to see what you can make, but others are clearly along very similar themes found this while reading up on them: youtube.com/watch?v=SrIHjh0NX5c also entirely possibly they were made by more than just mayans, but they've specifically been found in mayan sites somewhat regularly Herstory Begins Now has a new favorite as of 23:30 on Jan 25, 2022 |
