What I love about the current inflationary bubble is it's pure price gouging; it's capitalism at its purest but noone is saying that.

If any vaguely leftwing government was in power when this was happening this would be blamed on the big state and all that bullshit.

At this rate it feels like the only way that house prices/rent won't keep going up is if the whole system collapses.

I forget which country's government it was that explicitly came out and said "It is now our policy that house prices should never fall". Was it New Zealand maybe? Can anybody remember? I'm absolutely sure I saw it (probably ITT) but can't now find it.

I disagree, the Labour left is doomed no matter what course it takes because the party is structured to defeat it. Better to walk away from a crooked game

That would be a lot easier if it felt like there was anything to leave to. I feel like if nothing else the corbyn period does show the left can stand up for itself in the party given the chance. In the nicest possible way I think jam grandad, lovely bloke though he is, was largely responsible for his own defeat in 2019.

Difficult to know exactly what she thinks.

She said this:

quote:

The women’s movement needs the space to talk about sex and gender, without fear of being ‘no platformed’. We reserve that measure for fascists.

and this:

quote:

I think that there has to be the enforcement of single-space exemptions for women to heal and recover; and it is absolutely crucial that there are spaces, that there is provision, for trans people to also get the help and support they need.

Which are both dodgy...

UKIP and the other brexit parties, the most successful political upstarts in recent memory never really achieved any actual direct power in Westminster, they did it in the public eye, the media, I guess alternative seats of power, but ultimately the change they wanted to see and were successful in seeing was enacted through the closest affiliated power in parliament.

But we've done all this and it isn't directly comparable and we're hosed so...

It shows the left could when there was OMOV for leadership elections and then, with the power of leadership patronage, we could eventually just scrape a narrow majority on the NEC. But now we cannot get the leadership and therefore cannot get the NEC. It is over.

Yes the big difference ofc us that these parties were cultivated with lots of right wing lunatic money and given generous airtime totally disproportionate to their position by a friendly media. You could have an insurgent left wing party three times the size UKIP ever was and it would be totally ignored, or at best given a few hostile interviews and dismissed as a stalinist holocaust trans vegan holocaust party.

It's difficult to see where the left goes from here, esp if the unions/SCG aren't willing to jump ship and cut ties with labour.

Designed by Mrs Beeton as a recipe for an invalid:

TOAST SANDWICH: RECIPE
Ingredients: Thin cold toast, thin slices of bread-and-butter, pepper and salt to taste.

'Place a very thin piece of cold toast between two slices of thin bread-and-butter in the form of a sandwich, adding a seasoning of pepper and salt.

This sandwich may be varied by adding a little pulled meat, or very fine slices of cold meat, to the toast, and in any of these forms will be found very tempting to the appetite of an invalid.'

It's really disappointing that this high profile resignation from someone on the left wasn't packaged along with "and you, who believe yourself among the left, should withhold your vote and dues" but it's about what I've taken as standard anymore, both in the UK and stateside. If it's really that repulsive, why not propose it be destroyed?

Because she probably doesn't believe that. As far as I can tell she only quit the NEC, not the party.

I pretty much agree with that. If Pidcock believes the Labour Party is a dead end, then she should leave the NEC and leave the party. If she believes that it's worth staying to fight on, her duty is to stay in her position and keep working towards the left getting increased leverage in the NEC. Abandoning the NEC but staying in the party just surrenders any power for change that she does have, to no benefit.

You could alternatively look at it from the perspective that the "stay and fight" approach is fundamentally flawed because they can't even get their people to stick with it.
