I can't find it now, but I remember reading a piece (possibly in Rolling Stone) where a couple of music industry heavyweights talked about visits from CIA suits encouraging them to sign up and promote hip-hop artists who leaned in a particular direction. Early hip-hop was grassroots and channelled the anger of black inner city youth into music. It was very anti-establishment and much of the early stuff was about solidarity and fighting against the power. It channelled a lot of anger and inter-gang violence into musical expression through rap battles and b-boy dance-offs, and gave black people in inner cities a powerful voice. But in the early 90s the whole anti-establishment ethos of solidarity and "smoke weed be chill with your brothers" mentality was replaced with the gangsta mantra of black-on-black violence, misogyny and the glorification of top-quality CIA-supplied drugs. I'm not saying all popular music is an op, but given their track history and the cultural importance of music, the CIA absolutely had their fingers in that pie.
