I feel like I should be up against the wall for feeling like 'home' is basically how my life has been for the last few years. Wife, daughter, boring but easy and well remunerated IT job, living in a house I like, and seeing my friends and family frequently enough, even though I wish they were a little closer.

Idly wondering: If you are forced to apply for jobs you don't want, do the people at DWP check what you put in your applications or get feedback as to why you weren't picked? I mean if you were totally upfront and put stuff like VVV on your covering letter/ email or near the top of your cv, would you still get UC or are they going to simply assign people to any old job? "Unfortunately, I do not have a driving licence or access to a car and rely on public transport. Having checked bus timetables and the time taken to get from the bus stop to the workplace, I would not be able to arrive at work before 1015am and would need to leave promptly at 3pm. In addition, there is no public transport available on weekends or bank holidays so I am unable to do anything but daytime shifts between these hours. "I am very over-qualified for this job and only fair to let you know that should you employ me, I will be constantly on the lookout for something more fitting my skills and experience" "I do not have the skills and experience required for this job, but I'm sure with enough support and funding for training courses, I could be up to speed within 6 months."

The point of socialism is not that nobody can have nice things, the point is that everyone should have nice things, and if there are ten people who have more money individually than the rest of the planet combined, then maybe we should sieze their money so that everyone can have nice things. After all, if they got there through grit and hard work, they can get there again, right?

I don't know that there has ever been a time or place where things felt right to be honest, everything before I left school is an indistinct haze of terror and pain, everything since has felt like borrowed time, there's been the odd happy moment but never a sense of stability. Growing up I was sure I would never hit twenty, and then I did, and then things kept happening after that. It would be nice if there were some opportunity to build any sort of stability but there isn't. No place, no time, it's all just things to threaten you with having taken away. Not a day goes by when I don't curse the foolishness of them that brought me into the world, I don't know what the gently caress they were thinking, other than I suppose they weren't. On the plus side, having not had a sense of peace and place means I can't be sad about it being taken away, which definitely seems like it would be worse than just never having it. Plus the lack of a future plan or hope does at least relieve you of the feeling like you aren't "on track" as some people seem to worry about. I felt most at home probably during my masters then working in Manchester for a few years after. Great social scene, lots of friends, decent job, cool city. I moved to London and things got a lot more turbulent. Given that I’ve decided to move back to Manchester - a whole load of my best friends are still there, I still love the city, and there’s work in my field. Thoroughly looking forward to being back there to be honest.

Yeah I'm fine, I've genuinely felt that way for my entire life as far as I can remember. That's just normal for me. If anything I'm quite good today as I have a battletech campaign I'm having fun with, and I'm hoping to get a discount armchair tomorrow. I suppose the main point I was getting at is that I don't really get the desire to go back to any point because there has never been a point where it was better. Especially as the older I get the more flaws I see with the already quite lovely previous times in life. A place where/when I felt right is entirely something I would have to hope to happen in future, not a place I can wish to go back to. I love battletech and desperately want to play another stompy flight sim game, but then I saw something the other day about a bunch of chuds praising the new mechwarrior for 'not giving into woke sjw pressure' which I can only assume means it's a dickhead game for dickheads now. Funnily enough (mainly because wassisface from Reel Politik has been slagging off Graham Nash all day on Twitter) I was thinking about that song "Our House" - the "...is a very very very fine house" one by CSN&Y, not the "...in the middle of our street" one by Madness. It's hated by a certain kind of socialist and music fan for being schmaltzy and domesticated, bourgeois even, but I've always loved it because it's describing such a simple form of happiness. Sit in front of a fire with someone you love and a couple of cats running around, no struggles, no stress, just contentment. *That* should be the banner we're storming the barricades for, just the chance for everyone on Earth to be able to feel that sort of ease.
