Spotify is a service that plays a minute of ads for every minute and a half of music, and if any services business model is designed to piss me off until I give them money, then I'm never going to use it solely out of spite.

Youtube Music has all the same features and you can use an ad blocker on it. Plus if there are artists doesn't want their music on the platform xxGokux is more than happy to upload the full albums for you instead and Youtube doesn't give a poo poo!

Personally I'm just opposed to the idea of "streaming" music.

Buying music? Yeah, sure. If an artist puts their stuff on Bandcamp so I can buy it, download it, put it on a cloud drive, etc. whatever it takes to ensure I have more or less perpetual access to it, then I'm interested. But if it's some service that might suddenly remove stuff I've paid for, or crash, or collapse, or otherwise remove the "service" that gives me access to what I bought? Fuuuuuuuck them.

Also as far as I know Bandcamp actually gives artists a pretty fair cut, comparatively.

Yeah Bandcamp gives them 85% or 90% depending on how well they are selling, and 100% on pre announced bandcamp Fridays. I took the leap from spotify a while back and just spend what I would have paid in monthly subscription fee buying an album or 2 every month.

Thanks for the heads up about Tidal. Just switched over. Turns out they have a "lossless" sub, which just tickles me right.

Kinda wanted to ditch spotify for a while. Incidentally, right when they started bringing in podcasts I never listened to and couldnt disable in the suggestions.

Cancelling spotify is not a big deal. It's easy to switch to another streaming service.

Yeah it really is pretty easy. I paid for a month's sub to https://soundiiz.com/ and that lets you just select all of your saved items from Spotify and transfer them to Tidal (can be done with a ton of other services too). Took about 30ish minutes to copy all my favourited songs, albums, artists and playlists and I downloaded a csv of what happened so I can keep track of what was missing in Tidal (it was probably 95% there). The recommendation algo wasn't great so far but it also doesn't have any listening history so hopefully it gets better because I actually found a lot of music just using the Go to song radio feature in Spotify.

I also started resenting Spotify after hearing for years that they just couldn't pay artists more and then they gave Joe loving Rogan a hundred mil and the owner made an offer to buy Arsenal football club. I don't listen to podcasts anyway and I loving hate how they're always on my home screen--Jordan Peterson was in my recommendadtions last night which convinced me to just try Tidal out. The third artist in Tidal's recommendadtions when I logged in? Neil Young

As a bonus, it looks like Tidal is offering 3 months for $2 (for the Hi-Fi package) until Feb 1st but the offer only seems to appear as a popup in a desktop browser--you won't see it in the app or on mobile browsers.

I've switched to Tidal for this exact reason. I listened to one podcast (Fall of Civilisations, its very good) and now Spotify won't shut the gently caress up about podcasts. I'm old, I listen to Radio 4 I don't listen to podcasts.

If you're paying an annual amazon prime membership, you already have access to a bunch of stuff on amazon music. Then it's like $7/mo for the whole catalog in hd, uhd, lossless and spatial whatever, a few more bucks for a family account.

Good.

I don't like the music streaming model either. Like I said before, "new boss - same as the old boss," but it's here to stay. If you don't believe me, ask anyone under 18 what they think the dollar value of a song is.

Seeing so many people jump ship from Spotify is downright cathartic. I don't have very many "I fuckin' atodaso" moments, but this is a big one.

So I just learned that Truth in Advertising tracks some of this grift poo poo and the most hilarious part is that GOOP and Alex Jones sell the exact same wellness poo poo, just marketed differently. A nutritional supplement is Moon Dust for GOOPers but Caveman Strength Powder for Jones listeners. Both audiences can be very easily sold on the idea that these are treatments the gov'mint or big pharma don't want you to know! And so the lack of approval or vetting by the FDA actually works in their favor for selling bogus 'treatments' to these audiences, rather than against.

Wellness is an old grift, that's why we call them snake oil salesmen.

If you're paying for prime, you already have access. Why waste the money on another app service when there's one included?

But yeah, amazon pays artists like spotify does, hundreds of plays to make a single buck. You could always subscribe to bandcamp or tidal, but the selection on prime is hard to beat for the price of included in your membership, and significantly better when you shell out another $7/mo.

Not like the people at apple or google or youtube are going to be any better.
