10/10, masterpiece. Must-watch.

Yeah, the final two episodes made it. It might be the stupidest show in 2022 so far, but it revels in that. It's less of a parody and more like if you took one of those voyeur movies and decide to make it really silly without actually adding any deeper thoughts about the medium.
So yeah, it's a bit like the Scary Movie version of these One Small Favor movies.
Kirsten Bell is obviously really good in it.
All in all I liked it. It was a solid 6.7820469483905 out of 10.00000000002

Better than the mixed reviews suggested then? I wonder how many episodes that was based on if it sounds like the final 2 make it.

I think 3 episodes of Afterparty is about as much as I’ll want to get through before next week. I like it but it’s not something I could binge imo.

All put together, I had a good time by the end. But well, I wouldn't suggest it to anyone else, since there's so much better TV available.

It's an absurdist parody, the whole thing is a joke.

Pennyworth : London :: Gothan : New York City.

Pennyworth's channeling British comics influences, particularly Luther Archwright. It's got a lot of Bond, a lot of Michael Kane films (particularly, and obviously, 'Alfie'), the Omen, villains patterned after Nyder and Davros from 70's Doctor Who, Jack the Ripper mythos, Vietnam War films, Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy....

It's great stuff, really good and fun. It treats the UK like a version of cold war Cuba, the devil turns up. It's great.

Hah - coming back to post this again as on the second episode and they just hung and then disembowled Jimmy Saville on a public hanging broadcast akin to a game show as a background joke. Made me almost choke and die. Thanks for the recco! Fun so far and very much like you described.

It ramps up slightly more obviously as it goes along, but it never gets to the point where it's a rapid-fire jokes machine like Community or It's Always Sunny -- other than maybe the final episode. For the most part it's a very ironic sort of comedy -- I'd go several scenes without really laughing to finding one particular scene to be absolutely hilarious and well-observed surrealist bullshit. Like the way the narrative treats the lead's Mary Sue mental illness with the utmost dread seriousness, despite the fact that it's an absolutely bonkers thing to shove into a story like this.

The jokes about the casserole dish, or the horrific art, or every time Kristen Bell starts to well up thinking about her child's death... after a while that poo poo just became comedy gold.

Like, it's not for everyone, but if it's for you it's definitely for you.

I might fall off of The Afterparty; I just can't get into the murder mystery at all and the jokes just don't hit. Lord and Miller are really excellent at parody but none of the jokes really lean into it (and there aren't enough of them) for it to land. It's been a tremendous waste of the cast so far.

"how do i keep forgetting that" + casserole rain drop had me busting up and i think it might be for me. it reminds me of when you're watching these kinds of things with your exes and like you'd be cracking up but youre the only one and seem rude because of it somehow, but in this the laughing points are on purpose.

"yeah i like wine" scene transition to them all three just laughing at dinner for too long and hard over nothing shown and then not bothering to really lead it anywhere just takes sips of drink lol

This is an incredible long shot but a very, very, very long time ago when Conan was on his old Late Night show, I remember him doing a bit I would love to see again if anybody has it. Conan was doing episodes on a college campus and decided to just go walking around the campus at night. He bumps into some random student who goes,"Hey you're Conan O'Brien.... your show sucks!" and Conan replying with complete earnestness,"Oh no, it DID suck but it's better now!" Then the student took him to his dorm room because he wanted him to meet his roommate, who was asleep, so he shook the guy awake yelling,"Dude! Conan O'Brien's here! Wake up!" while Conan is just looming awkwardly over by the doorway. It absolutely killed me the first time I saw it.
You're conflating a few things, but I'm almost positive that you're thinking of Conan visiting Houston, where at the time his show didn't air until 2:40 AM. One of the greatest remote segments he's done:

It reminds me a lot of a toned down Touch of Cloth, which is a Brit parody of police shows (title also a riff, on a Touch of Frost). Cloth goes way heavier on the visual gags, but is similar in that it's also propped up by a 'real' mystery plot, as well as being carried by an excellent actor (in Cloth's case John Hannah).

I look forward to trying the Impossible Title To Remember Show Starring Kristen Bell. I think I might be the target audience as someone that loves those thrillers and also has been in love with Kristen Bell for like 20 years

Unrelated, I watched all 3 Fear Street movies on Netflix the last couple days and I would say they were Ok for being R Rated R L Stine. Not a bad waste of time if that's your thing, but also, don't think about the plot at all critically afterwards because it will drive you insane lol

Yeah it's funny I'm cracking up but also interested in the murder plot going on, doubly so because of the nature of this show it really could be a lot of potentially bizarre or hilarious things, plus the delivery of stuff is just so on point. My guess is a casserole dish did it. Touch of Cloth I'll check out sometime, might need to watch a UK Police show because the police characters in UK shows always throw me off for not being aggressive jackboot violent thugs like over here.

Halo should only ever be a video-game, it does not work at all in other forms of media.

Reminds me of BSG to SG:U era Syfy movie. Kinda generic American action Sci-Fi movie. Could be worse but can already guess boring copy paste action scenes, dialogue and plot. If I had to toss out a guess: middling reviews whose praises are “decent action”, nobody remembers after a month, shocked it gets a second season then quietly cancelled to apathetic reactions. Might be wrong but that would be where I’d place my silver. Also guarantee that he will show his face a couple of times, possibly for the climax. Second season he will be helmetless a decent portion.

Enjoying Pennyworth far more that I’d guess. Episode 8. They make alt universe Blighty far less racist in the 60s and it’s weird to see English fascists and cops so diverse. That and the predominant use of MP40s with government enforcers. Maybe some of us just really want to see Stens, Sterlings, FN Fals and Bren guns. Always liked the look of a Sterling with the long curved magazine.
