any goons work in any of the big grocery chains? anecdotally here but I notice my small local grocer is pretty much business as usual except for being out of coke and distilled water for some reason. but I had to go to my local zehrs and it looks grim with half empty shelves. I used to work in the same small grocer I go to so I asked someone why they weren’t “facing” the aisles. moving stuff to the front to make it look fuller which was always something driven into me when I worked there. they said they were no longer facing the shelves. is this something others are being told in the big Weston owned chains? making their stores look emptier than they would otherwise?

I'm sort of beer industry adjacent, so I can tell you that aside from staffing, the reason you're seeing shortages on things like coke and distilled water is because it's getting pretty hard to reliably get aluminum and cardboard. It's why you see the Sobey's chain discounting bottles of soda instead of 12 packs of cans. In terms of facing products, staffing is a real issue, and I find the employees at the grocery stores near me at least are skewing really young. I don't think they can afford to fire anyone, so easier duty would seem to make sense.

Facing is what goes first when you're understaffed and people can't finish all their poo poo they have to do normally in my experience. It was the lowest priority part of our process back when I worked retail.

They obviously can’t do that in rich areas because Sobeys is the premium brand and FreshCo the discount brand but expect any Safeway/Sobeys in less affluent areas to become a FreshCo.
