College Slice
In addition to ordering a quill extender I also went and ordered a new bike seat. If my cables aren't long enough I might need to go to the bike shop for new cables.

I also have a fitting appointment for next week, we'll see what they have to say as well. I think fitting first to confirm that a higher stem would help and then if the stem is too long for the cables then I'll bring it to the bike shop.

Great amount of fun, highly recommended. It rides like a normal bike, feels solid and sturdy, and just opens up loads of possibilities - I've even used it to tow my wife's bike to a service when one of her brakes needed fixing.

One issue is the weight - by itself it's 22kg which is substantial, but easily manageable. It's geared well so with light loads (e.g. one kid) even hills aren't much of a problem. But with heavier loads (2 kids when my son is feeling lazy, or 1 kid plus camping gear), inclines become a bit of a schlep. Occasionally when the route gets fairly steep, I've even had to dismount and push, which is disappointing.

So my very naive question to you lovely well-informed posters: would it make sense for me to invest in SPD/clipless pedals and shoes? I've never tried anything other than flat pedals and sneakers before. My assumption is that SPD would allow me to pedal more efficiently (exerting upward force on the lift as well as downward force on the push) and so hopefully make long / steep routes more easily manageable. However, I associate that kind of tech more with road and mountain bikes. Does it make sense on a cargo bike? If so, recommendations for pedals / shoes? I'd be looking for something that I could wear in comfort and without looking out of place at my desk in the office.

Advice greatly appreciated!

A big low gear is what you want so you can just sit and spin up hills.

OBAMNA PHONE

imo one of the best reason for clipless pedals is not having your feet fly off the pedals when you're going uphill or just pedaling hard. maybe try out some toe clip cages and stiff shoes and see if that helps

Looking for a dreaded ebike. Wife wants some bikes to go about 7 miles to and from house to beach, it's predictably flat. We would maybe be hauling a baby trailer or something

Budget is $1000-3200 per bike, preferably it has like, I guess a Bosch system? I dunno, don't want a piece of crap that won't have support in 3-5 years

I had a 23c road bike for like a decade, put many thousands of miles on it, commuted daily by bike for six years, totally get the advantage of regular bikes. Wife wants an ebike to go to the beach with. So ebike

I'd like an ebike that doesn't look like hot garbage, a lot of the budget Chinese things are function over aesthetics, I know if a bike is ugly, I'm not gonna ride it much

Edit: if my bike had a perfectly horizontal top tube, that would be tits

I have the luxury of living in a city with a world-class public transport system and decent bicycle infrastructure (though there's plenty of space for improvement on the latter). We've been car-free since we moved here. It's great! But wouldn't have been realistic where we lived previously - I was still bike-commuting past potholes and aggressive drivers, but certainly wouldn't have dared doing so with my kids in tow.

Which I suppose is the problem - you need a reasonable level of infrastructure before hearts-and-minds (and hopefully, eventually, infrastructure-) changing behaviours become tenable...

So with Specialized moving to direct sales, is their profit margin just increasing that much or will they reduce the direct to consumer MSRP?

Edit: I mean I know the answer but it kinda sucks.

Arigato, Racists.
They could also piss off (even more) shops that still stock their stuff if they give consumers an extra incentive to purchase direct. They probably want to dump shops eventually, but not yet. Specialized would still win in either situation though.

A number of mfgs do direct sales now, but most of them don't just send the bike right to your house. Instead it goes to a nearby bike shop who puts it together for you and gets a cut of the sale. Most of the brands my shop carries do this. Right now it can be kind of useful as there might be bikes online that a dealer wouldn't normally carry and can't order. I don't think any shop really likes this but so far at least I'm not seeing it as the downfall of the LBS. And no, it's not going to make bikes cheaper.

Except they upcharge by $2000 vs the real used market making it pointless.

There’s an attempt to do the same in the UK called cycleexchange, it’s also so expensive that you’d be better off buying new.

Less than £1000 off RRP for 3 year old bikes is not why people buy used.

It varies a lot by bike. They do have some NOS stock, especially with ebikes.
Older steel stuff is especially undervalued by their algorithm and unsurprisingly gets sold first.

Not a Dickman, just a shape
With the 25km/h assist cut off here I'm really not too excited about getting an ebike

Not saying others can't enjoy them, but I tend to cruise around 20-30 for my cycling into the city and back so I would genuinely see little advantage to the tech for myself personally, atleast not one worth the couple grand price tag

More power to the ebike people, they absolutely have their place in the diaspora but I wonder how many would be served just as well by a good quality bicycle with a wide range and experience re:gears and pacing?

Still, anything to get more people on bikes, and I'm definitely seeing more and more people riding around here

On slightly different news

I'm going on a local community protest(?) Ride in a few weeks

The council has been dragging their heels finishing up a bikeways project, so a group of families and local cyclists are utilising critical mass principles to ride the projected route. We have a strong enough cycling culture in the area that the attendees won't just be weird bearded dudes with hi vis panniers but also full families on bakfiets and daily commutors

Will be fun? Hopefully, my first group ride
