yeah deciding that you don't like the way someone else is driving and trying to enforce rules of the road is insane car brained behavior and very dangerous. the honda driver is a fuckin rear end in a top hat and i'm not sorry they crashed but the truck driver is also a piece of poo poo.

This is the thing I hate most about highway driving. People feel like they deserve special left-lane privileges for being in a hurry, even if it disrupts traffic or endangers other. Even if the truck hadn't escalated the situation, everyone would still try to assign some blame to him because he didn't immediately yield to the maniac behind him. Lots of traffic laws actually say you have to yield like that.

Honda should have chillaxed and deescalated in response to truckbrain. instead, they have carbrain and overcommitted to correcting a perceived misjustice. another dumbass waste of everything that could have been deescalated and forgotten within five minutes. destroy all cars

I worked as an insurance adjuster a long while ago and handled total losses and casualty claims. I think a year of looking at those claims and talking to family members of the deceased really screwed my head on right when it comes to defensive driving. the goal of any trip is to survive and take as little monetary damage as possible. I assume everyone is out to either purposefully or accidentally gently caress me over. not a great situation, car reliance and all, but it’s the best I can make of it. I slow down and purposefully avoid as much aggro as possible from carbrained drivers

what's great is once you pull over you can watch from a safe distance! My new technique with all dangerous driving has been to just immediately (and safely) pullover. It's like im rerolling traffic gacha or something

in real life if you are going 55 on the freeway and everyone else is going 70, you're probably better off just speeding up so that the differential in speed between you and other motorists is diminished. "the right thing" will be little solace when you get rearended .

And that's the problem with cars is that they are basically a completely legalized might is right bullshit that forces everyone to also drive and behave dangerously

Freeway driving is a high stakes fluid dynamics simulation and your goal is to not cause any turbulent flow.

+1. Never got rear-ended or pulled over. Just set it and forget it (conditions allowing). The more people that take the approach, the more likely it'll be that others will follow suit.

This is a great way to increase the risk to drivers far behind you by generating traffic waves. Not like you'll ever notice, though.

The crossover point for murdering instead of maiming pedestrians and cyclists is around 20mph. Which is why the universal speed limit for anything not on rails should be 20mph. Bicycles are allowed to go faster though, as a treat.

If I'm maintaining a steady speed indefinitely, it's the other people who are causing the traffic waves

The first step toward de-normalizing the hyper-aggressive, every-person-for-themselves approach to highway driving is refusing to get caught up in it. Attitudes must shift and that requires each of us to break these hosed up norms.

Think of the lady who got out in front of car traffic in the bus lane. It could just as easily be said that her decision to take a stand against a lovely status quo endangered her life and those of others around her because who knows how the fuckers behind the wheel might have reacted. But she was right to do it.

If you - the particle - are moving at a lower velocity than the fluid - the traffic flow - you are generating a traffic wave. The fact that this is hard to grasp is why freeway driving is suicidal.

You're also safer the less often there's someone in your blind spot or passing you in a different lane because you have another degree of freedom in the event that something unforeseen happens.

I've been car free for a few years now, so I'll be riding and walking instead!

I don't begrudge anyone not taking a stand that conflicts with their personal risk tolerances. But I'm going to take the steps I feel comfortable taking, whether it's cautiously asserting my right of way at an intersection as a pedestrian, carefully taking a lane when I have no other choice on a bike, or relaxing with the cruise control set to 60 on the freeway. These things might put me at marginally higher risk of being murdered by an rear end in a top hat

being a ped and loving with cars is one thing because you can just jump right back on the sidewalk. being trapped on the freeway with a bunch of rabid suicidal carbrains all travelling so fast they need 100M to stop is another

also lmao if youre carfree maybe dont waste time asserting what risks everyone else should be taking on the freeway. Being car free is awesome gently caress cars, also gently caress freeways
