Loudoun would be there one that would lean red, though, so I guess that makes sense? I'm just going off of the kind of person that works in that county and the dominant industry there.

So you're sitting in gridlock on the potholed highway for poors looking over at the rich man's expressway which is beautiful and traffic free They are euphemistically called "Public Private Partnerships" which is a way to say public funds will be captured by private entities. Which is already bullshit because private companies are contracted to build the new roads so there's already a public private partnership, but that contractor just gets paid once while the toll operator gets paid constantly.

When I lived there, which was some time ago, a few blocks down from my house was a payday loan place that had purchased a very distinctive fast food building, maybe an old mcdonalds or some such, and just repainted it, and I always remembered it looked very funny. But they were very common. My favorite military base adjacent store is all the way on the other side of the country, right outside Ft. Lewis. Every time I drive by there, for the last 20 years, there is a sign for "$1 Chinese Food". I have never been brave enough to stop in and try it.

So these payday loan places have the highest concentrated market of marks imaginable. People very rarely get fired from the military as well, and the military can and will garnish wages, so it is a perfect opportunity for them. Also, even though they "provide everything you need" it is not necessarily all that good. For many sailors that provision means they can live on the boat, just like when they are underway, and can eat the food provided on the ship. So those folks tend to eat out a lot because they cannot make their own food and don't want to eat boat food, and there are a lot of poor fiscal decisions people can take or even need to take because they are living on the boat. Storage units are another one. The classic military misspending adventure is paying sticker price for a loving new ford mustang that you cannot afford.

I will say that after a decade in the Navy, which I absolutely hated, it worked out really well for me in terms of employment after the fact. Like I am blessed to be financially stable and doing well now. I don't think people should have to give up a decade of their life and support nebulous, at best, foreign policy to achieve this stability though. Many veterans scoff at student loan forgiveness because they received the GI Bill or had their loans forgiven through military student loan forgiveness programs, and say "Anyone else could do that if they really wanted", but I really don't think military service should be expected if you want to receive a higher education.

Majority of Canadians disagree with ‘freedom convoy’ on vaccine mandates and lockdowns https://theconversation.com/majority-of-canadians-disagree-with-freedom-convoy-on-vaccine-mandates-and-lockdowns-176323 The arrival of the self-styled “freedom convoy” in Ottawa this week has dominated headlines, but do the demonstrators represent the views of most Canadians? When it comes to their stark opposition to government-imposed restrictions and vaccine mandates, research shows the protesters clearly represent a minority view — no matter how vocal they are. Most Canadians support government measures to help control the spread of COVID-19, according to our ongoing public opinion study. Known as the COVID-19 Monitor, the study of Canadians’ attitudes relating to the COVID-19 pandemic and public policy interventions has been running since shortly after the first COVID-19-related government restrictions were introduced in March 2020. It has amassed more than 100,000 respondents, making it one of the largest continuing studies of Canadian attitudes toward the pandemic. The study is a partnership between McMaster University’s Digital Society Lab and Vox Pop Labs, a social enterprise that conducts public opinion research polling. We hold positions with both organizations. Our findings indicate that a majority of Canadians support most of the measures that have been employed by federal and provincial governments aimed at preventing the transmission of COVID-19. In most cases support has remained relatively stable since the beginning of the pandemic. Although they are widely attributed as the catalyst for the trucker rally, vaccine mandates actually enjoy high levels of support among Canadians. Survey data shows approximately four out of five Canadians agree that health- and long-term care workers should be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Roughly three-quarters of Canadians think that vaccines should be mandatory for government workers and politicians.

Toll lanes are the most egregious form of wealth tax. Adding them here in Seattle on I-405 crippled traffic and had people with long commutes (i.e. the poorest people) paying up to $20/day. I think it's more now. The busier traffic is, the higher the toll went, and most days it just ran at a steadily increasing "max". Traffic was unpleasant but manageable prior - nice if you carpooled, after they made the switch it wasn't uncommon to have a 1.5 hour commute from Kirkland to Lynnwood (17 miles), daily, unless you paid the toll. On top of all that, none of the income goes to bettering the city. The whole system is run by some third party in Texas or something. I was never able to track how this benefited a single person in Washington State. "GoodtoGo!" my loving rear end. Jelly fucked around with this message at 21:07 on Feb 4, 2022 |
