If you enjoy James Gunn, Peacemaker is great. I was honestly surprised with the range of episode 6. It seriously hit more notes in 45 minutes than almost any show I can recall. Granted, it's still goofy superhero ish bullshit, but it's fun, and the actors take it seriously. Completely unrelated, but if you need more Beatles content after watching Get Back, please watch McCartney 1 2 3 on Hulu. It's Rick Rubin loving around with the masters while Paul enthusiastically spouts his insane memory and legitimately enjoys his own songs. It's fantastic. It puts me in a good mood just thinking about it.

The latest episode of Peacemaker has that very James Gunn moment where the audience is granted 'permission' to enjoy a bloodbath of innocents (yeah, yeah, I know they're cops) through a perfunctory plot contrivance, in this case a mass mind-control/body snatching event. Though the carnage won't take place until the next episode. I think Gunn is a hack and TSS and GotG2 both sucked, so I'm kinda surprised he has the only writing credit on each episode because I've actually been enjoying the show. He's learned how to write more than just one character type (manchild) and his idiosyncratic quippiness is only coming from some of the characters instead of all of them. Either someone behind the scenes is having a moderating influence on him (or possibly restraining him) or this is a project he actually cares about. Or maybe it's just that John Cena's performance is anchoring the show so well.

McGruder wasn’t involved in the last season of the show. It’s a large reason why it sucked so much.

Punkin Spunkin posted:Does it have the charm of the first Tom Cruise movie? I wasnt familiar with the books but i was really into that film. Goofy charm, with a suprising sense of humor. That's kinda what I'm worried about, given that the guy they cast as Reacher was obviously chosen because of his look rather than his acting resume. Whatever criticisms people may have of Cruise's version, Cruise at least is going to reliably bring that natural charm and charisma that can carry you through a mediocre story. And I get it, the fans of the books were like "he shouldn't be effortlessly charming like Tom Cruise, he should just be a hulking badass with hands the size of a frying pan!!" but the bottom line is if I'm gonna watch a t.v. series about one central lead character, that character has to be at least somewhat compelling to watch when they aren't loving people up.

IMO it definitely does. The actor is a giant meathead but he's also pretty charismatic in an 80s Arnold kind of way. They are really playing up the socially awkward part of the character, which I gather is from the books. And there's also plenty of humor. There's one scene in particular where the lead detective, who is a full on straight man character, rants about how much he loves the band 38 special and it was so out of nowhere I was dying.

Scooby-Doo was a noble effort, but I think the thing that was truly keeping it from good is that it's clearly a movie being pulled between two tones. Gunn's original script was a much more adult parody and at a certain point during production the studio decided it wanted an all-ages comedy. Gunn's first cut was rated R. They had to go so far as to CGI-out cleavage in the final cut, so I can only imagine what else got trimmed and changed in editing to accommodate. It shows on screen, with the final product feeling like it's all over the place tonally and shifting what game it's playing at different points of the film.

I got through 1.5 seasons of Billions but it seems to just repeat itself "Paul the Attorney busts Damien the slimy hedge fund douche, oh wait no he doesn't" over and over again along with Maggie Siff quitting and returning to the same job over and over again. I can't see it going 6 seasons despite some great actors. And like Succession, Everyone is a huge dickbag in the show too but not near as hilarious.

Jerkface posted:But the episode also contained a bloodbath of innocents??? (who are still cops) - and I mean, there also already been a bloodbath of aliens who aren't cops ??? Seems like a weird thing to try and dig Gunn at. Yeah, that was handled pretty well because Peacemaker actually reacted to the violence, and Vigilante's reaction (which is the typical reaction of most of Gunn's characters to ultraviolence) was called out. Also Murn seemed shocked that he'd caused it if I read that moment correctly. But the difference there was that those people were still real people so their deaths were impactful, and the lead detective had been portrayed sympathetically so her getting taken out was a minor gut punch. By comparison, in GotG2 when the blue guy's crew mutinies on him he effortlessly murders them all without a second thought because 'oh, they're bad now,' or in TSS I can't even remember the initial justification for them mowing down hordes of soldiers without thought or comment, and at the end there's another mass mind control event via alien infection, which frees those people up to become cannon fodder. Gunn wants to get to the exploding body parts as quickly as possible but he seems to realize that some kind of dehumanization is required beforehand so that the audience doesn't feel too uncomfortable at the spectacle (or perhaps so his characters can remain likeable while dispensing mass murder) but the end result is that none of the carnage is particularly impactful because the targets might as well be the same kind of CGI hordes you see in other movies. But who knows, maybe he'll surprise me and next week's episode won't play out the way I'm expecting.

I don't think I can not watch Reacher. Remember the time when Reacher dug a bunch of swimming pools by hand and got so ripped that when he was shot in the chest it didn't matter because the bullet lodged harmlessly in his massive pectoral muscle.

A sickeningly sweet love letter to the super wealthy Metallica fans out there. I liked the new Nightmare Alley. found it entertaining enough. It may not be in say, the GDT top 3 but it's still visually compelling enough with a solid cast (and I never usually care for Cooper). Cate Blanchett and Willem Dafoe are fun and it's worth it just to see Del Toro take a shot at noir. I'm on a Mike Flanigan streaming run rn. Watched his Ouija (on HBO) and Oculus, both decent and creepy films. Gonna hit up Hush on Netflix next.
