I heard about waypoint publishing that fic for some reason but I didn't realize it was supposed to be 9S being punished for being a sexist or whatever it's been a while since I've played Nier Automata but I don't remember that really coming up unless you count the sex/death interplay that is a major theme of the game anyway

waypoint published a decent amount of fanfic as some sort of Exploration of Fandom or w/e, but I'm pretty sure all of it was wacky crossover pileup stuff, which is the most stereotypical image of fanfiction you could possibly project and is pretty indicative of their whole attitude as far I was aware. esp since iirc the editor defended publishing the 9s fic by saying he hadn't read it beforehand, lol

I think you would genuinely need a writer on the fanfic beat to cover it well; someone embedded within a variety of different fanfic communities. Like what Gene Park does but for fanfiction instead of video games.

Most of it's like, just sincere explorations of one singular source material and its characters and setting. Fanfic is useful because it lets you A) skip past stuff like character setup or worldbuilding and just get to the stuff you want to do, B) have an audience that comes in with extremely obvious expectations that you can either play with or lean into, and C) guarantees you at least some audience. fanfiction can have a lot of power because you can rely on your audience knowing the characters to skip straight to the stuff you actually want to say, instead of spending thousands of words laying the groundwork it can also be crap, but, what isn't that true of

I used to be an avid Waypoint listener but between the Red Strings Club stuff and their Eva deep dive, I got tired of them being so into their own opinions that they consistently refuse to change their mind or re-evaluate when faced with better understanding and/for facts. The Eva podcast is wild because, for a bunch of people who have careers that require critical analysis, they consistently ignore obvious things for their own projected opinions. Throughout the whole thing they consider stuff through a very North American/Western lens and don't even attempt to understand that the meaning or symbolism might be different because it is a Japanese work. I don't remember the exact example but they had some wild thoughts about Japanese bath sharing and went on and on about Anno slut shaming Misato because of her interiority scenes in the last episodes of the TV series. I still read and listen to critique of things I like but I have found I enjoy it far more as an additive after I've experienced the work myself.
