So apparently some people think Russia and China are so close that China would help Russia if it attacked Ukraine? I'm just watching the Olympic opening ceremony on NBC and this guy they brought in as a "China expert" suggested as such. I think the actions and statements that preceded this event made it much likelier to happen and contributed to the circumstances whereby it emerged. The government of the US seems motivated to increase tensions, and this is what I think is catalyzing a similar media process as the lead up to the 2003 Iraq invasion. That’s just my hypothesis, for which I have no strong evidence but a personal conviction based on things that have happened before. This is an extremely reaching interpretation trying to blame the US government for a singular media error, and to imply their aggressive intent vis-a-vis Russia in the process, which is eye-brow-raising enough to suggest it's mostly about confirming previous biases, and additionally it's posted in very bad taste on account of comparing the situation around Iraq in 2003 to Ukraine post-2014 where you must only look up to see Russia taking lethal military actions against the country on a daily basis, even if it is not currently taking further land as we speak. And to top it off, when somebody tries to show why that comparison is terrible by demonstrating the toll the very real war on Ukraine has taken already, you respond flippantly by calling their response irrelevant. steinrokkan fucked around with this message at 11:09 on Feb 5, 2022 |

China absolutely does not care about Russia beyond liking the narrative that small countries joining defensive alliances against a regional threat is bad, and that anything it does to draw US attention from the Pacific to the Atlantic is good.

China cares a lot about Russia in the sense that they require substantial energy imports for the next few decades before their domestic supply exceeds demand, and imports using a pipeline from Russia cannot be interdicted by a foreign navy. Other than that, they don't give a poo poo. But this does mean that for the short and medium term, their interests align and you can expect China to never do something that would threaten energy imports from Russia.

Mr. Sunshine posted:Like, "western media should dial down the war hysteria, just look at this embarrassing fuckup" is a perfectly legit take re the Bloomberg thing. Not really, since, as is well-known, major news outlets prepare template stories for major events that are either inevitable (obituaries) or very likely (Olympics opening ceremony, Russia invades Ukraine) so they only have to fill in the details they can't know beforehand once it actually happens. That's not hysteria, it's simple preparation.

There's also something to be said for the second or third strongest country in the world being dependent on you economically. The more Russia fucks its relations with the West (and the more the West backs Russia into a corner), the closer they get pushed together. Russian military technology was important to China for a long time too, though I think that's far less true today than it used to be. In any case, China absolutely is in the far stronger position as the rising and less isolated power, so while they enjoy the strategic benefit of partnership with Russia and balancing against the US (as they aligned with the US against the Soviets during the latter part of the Cold War), they can also afford to give Russia lovely terms for the partnership, so they can give half-hearted support for Russian policy objectives and balance that against other concerns.
