Somehow mom & pop stores always had huge horror sections. It certainly helped considering how little Blockbuster would carry once they started showing up everywhere.

Former BBV Asst Manager here-

It depended on the Blockbuster. If we're talking a company owned store built on the ground up, yeah, horror content could be lacking. For a franchise owned or a corporate store that took over another chain store or a mom & pop, you'd likely find horror a fresh store wouldn't have. The franchise that was by my old place had stuff like Faces of Death and the unrated I Drink Your Blood available. The corporate one that took over Movies to Go in my old neighborhood just pulled out the porn section and transferred over the rest of the inventory so it had stuff like The Devils available.

Relevant to the 2000s horror chat from a couple days ago, I watched Valentine (2001) for the first time this morning and man that was… not great. Lots of inappropriate nu-metal playing at parties. I went to a lot of parties in 2001 and I can assure you they would’ve been playing R Kelly and Usher, not poo poo like Disturbed and Static-X.

Very happy to have successfully guessed the movie based off these reviews.

I don't know precisely how to explain it but I'm looking for some recommendations for horror where the threat doesn't come from monsters or killers but the environment or the nature of the universe.

I know it's a loose description, but I mean stuff like House of Leaves or Coherence. I suppose what I'm looking for is cosmic horror minus the lovecraftian monsters.

The more novel the concept the better. Doesn't necessarily need to be a movie, books and TV are also appreciated.

Annihilation and the stories of Thomas Ligotti arguably qualify. Sometimes Ligotti's stories have monsters I guess but it's usually not about the monster

Triangle, kind of. It's still people killing people but it's caused by their environment. Great little sci-fi/horror film this one.

OK, one of them might not be a Koji Shiraishi movie. It's called Chichibu Demon and it's definitely a Japanese found footage movie, but it's not on Shiraishi's Wikipedia page. But I can't find any website that's willing to name a director for it. Trying to research this has shown me that there's a rabbit hole of Japanese found footage horror, including a film series called Senritsu Kaiki File. And there is a group subbing that series, but it looks like they only release them through pre-scheduled streams on their Discord channel? Which is an insanely huge pain in the rear end but I saw this screen cap from one of them

and jesus christ I want to watch that. If you tried to create a screencap specifically targeted towards getting my interest and attention, you couldn't do much better than that.

I'm on that Discord, and you're 100% right, it is a huge pain in the rear end. They rotate through the movies that are 'available' (i.e. hosted on someone's Google Drive) and it changes every month or so. Chichibu Demon isn't currently on there, but I'll keep an eye out for you when/if it pops back up.

Chichibu Demon has been subbed, but the release I have was hardcoded so you might not be able to find an srt. And there isn't a director credited in the movie at all. It was released by a company that mostly does gravure dvds, along with some zero budget spooky urbex type stuff, barely any actual movies.

Probably everybody in this thread already knows, but Noroi / The Curse is a found footage/mocumentary about, well, a curse. Structurally similar to The Ring in that most of the movie is people investigating weird poo poo, and things going well and truly off the rails in the last few minutes.

Pi is awesome. It's ultra-low budget to the point where the movie's star was also webmaster for the official website, and probably the entire cast budget went on paying Mark Margolis, but it's a psychotic masterpiece on a level with anything Lynch ever did. It was also IIRC the first movie scored by Clint Mansell, who cameos in the film.
