if you're concerned about game overs, don't entirely dump psyche and physical to 1 since Volition and Physical Instrument determine your psych and hit points (2 is fine to avoid OHKOs and it's relatively easy to raise most stats when you really need to)

making a dump stat have your sig skill (since it boosts the learning cap or every skill in that section by 1, meaning it doubles it if it's set to 1) is a decently valid move

other than that have fun

Broadly speaking : Whatever you want. There's lots of ways through the game and failing at stuff can sometimes be more fun that succeeding.

Do keep some skill points in your back pocket in case there's a white check you need to unlock. Do make some manual saves, autosaves can be a while apart and bugs/jank does happen. Do know that you can use healing items while the bar is ticking down to save you from a game over even when you are at 1 (though damage does lower your effective Endurance and Volition).

Do post some trip reports of any moments that stood out to you (even if most of it is under spoiler blocks.)

EDIT : If you don't like the presets, and hitting random doesn't inspire you, 2/2/2/6 split between the four stats however you like will give you a focused style of play, with a good amount of growth potential still.

Consider reading the entry on https://beforeiplay.com/index.php?title=Disco_Elysium but it is a little overlong so up to you if you care/how blind you want to be.

Just picked this up over the weekend. Went in basically blind and just chose the first pre-gen character. High Intellect and Motor Skills, low physical and emotional stats. Really unique game and it works well. I was originally worried that all the conflicting traits would get tiresome, and by the end(?) of the game they kind of do, but I haven't actually finished the game yet. I'm building communism and have solved the case, but haven't done the denouement yet. I'm picking perks blindly and for the past few levels I've been focusing on perks, and maybe the occasional skill point to help unlock a white roll.

I only have one question. I've found 3/4 parts of the armor, but not the helmet. I did the quest with Cuno's dad, but didn't share the speed with Cuno, so now no one is mentioning the helmet ever again, was that a roadblock for completing the armor? If not cool. If so, that kind of sucks, but at least I can stop looking for it now.

Either way I'm really looking forward to a replay with a High Phys, High Psy, Supercop Fascist character. Not sure if I'll go full racist/sexist but I imagine that I probably won't have a choice.

Great game!

re: cuno yeah if you gently caress up with Cuno enough that he won't talk to you, you can't get the helmet quest unless you have it already. iirc it's that, and also offending him when talking about Cunoesse which can set him off

There's one bit that enshrined him in my heart forever.

quote:

You: It's too tiring. I don't have it in me. I'm beat down and broken.

Rhetoric: Very well. I guess no one will build Communism then. Tell the working man it's over. Unless anyone has... objections?

Logic: No objections. It's mathematically impossible to achieve a classless society. Everyone knows this.

Savoir Faire: Let not failure ensnare you any further, beautiful pixie girl! Be an acrobat! A prancing faerie queen!

Electrochemistry: Did someone mention cocaine? Are we doing cocaine? No? I'm sure I heard someone say Cocainimism...

Rhetoric: Anyone? Anyone else? There's no one?

Volition: There's one.

You: What should I do?

Volition: You should build Communism — precisely *because* it's impossible.

RPG Codex's thread on the game had people complaining that the game's portrayal of fascism was shallow and failed to reflect the ideological depth of fascism as explained by thinkers such as Schmitt and Evola. Honestly incredible that the game's art director was able to stand posting on that site so much.

Just beat it. Fuckin incredible.

I played it back at release but put it down right when I got to the fishing village. I became busy and enough time passed that I felt like I needed to start a new run to see it with fresh eyes, but that just paralyzed me because I was very attached to my Harry - full on superstar commie cryptid-hunter cop, specialized in empathy, just overall being an optimist in spite of everything. Coming back to that same save years later was an interesting experience - it was like Raphaël Ambrosius Costeau had another bout of amnesia, and would be newly surprised by things he'd done literally the day before.

It felt like the entire ending sequence was specifically catered to my choices - here was a living example of a lone leftist avenger striking from the shadows, and the gruesome, non-disco reality of that kind of life. All my showy communist bloviating went completely silent; I barely even tried. And then the phasmid uncoiled from the reeds and blew my mind - I'd honestly given up hope by that point, even though I'd gone so deep on the cryptid questline that Kim actually lost his temper for once. I was perfectly set up for that moment... and then I roll loving snake eyes on the first check and scare it off. I immediately reloaded that because gently caress losing out on what ended up being the best moment in the game. I exhausted that tree. She said she loved me. :3:

Also holy poo poo the reveal that Harry was a gym teacher is perfect, it explains so much, especially how bizarrely good he is with kids.

E: I just remembered how I got an absurdly lucky roll to open the crate to the MRLBG. Kim's speech at the end about how all my hunches bore fruit felt real good because yes, it really was all of them, even the extremely stupid baseless one I beat my head against until it worked.

This was exactly me as well, though I did rack up a fair few Sorry Cop points early on before I realized how the system worked. I even decided right from the start I would try to quit drugs and alcohol, unsure if the game would actually let me.

I kind of want to play through the same way again because there were more than a few tasks I wanted to complete but didn't because the end of the game kind of crept up on me, but I also want to try a more FYS/MOT build, too. I also agree that the cryptid encounter was by far the highlight in a game full of incredible experiences. And it felt all the more rewarding because I was trying to play as an optimist, believing that meaning (and good) could be found in this seemingly grim and uncaring world.

I'm letting the game rest for a bit first, though, because I figure it'll be better after a bit of a break to digest everything, and because since finishing it I've been enjoying reading the different takes in this thread.

If one starts digging into apocalyptic thought one digs into Greek words and a whole lot of Neoplatonism. The genre was Greek speaking in Rome.

Finishing up my final cut playthrough, and I realized that I have a problem with hoarding skill points. I basically beelined all the good +xp thoughts and then never used any points unless I wanted to add a thought or unlock a failed check. So I think I'm gonna try a playthrough where I spend them as I get them.

I wonder if it would be more interesting if there was a cap on the amount of skill points you could hold on to?
