The Carr apologia from his media mates reminds me of nothing so much as when the friends of someone accused of abuse spring to their defence with "oh but they were always so lovely to me!" like yes of course they were??? Because you were part of their bulwark against being held to account for the harms they caused? I don't know Carr's motivations and don't care to. All I can do (as a good existentialist) is judge him by his actions and words. He has a long track record of "joking" about rape, disabled people, and minorities (and other marginalised groups) in ways which damage those groups' abilities to live peacefully, so yeah I'm going to say pretty confidently that I think he's a oval office, no matter how ""lovely"" he is to his peers. e: I've always liked the number 22, it is the departmental number of Côtes d'Armor in Brittany where I've spent quite a lot of time.

Carr just wrote a bad joke. When your style of comedy involves circling the drain, you have to not slip. The price is a public apology and a serious think about what effect slipping has. His friends defending him presumably think he's capable of it. This whole lapse in judgement = bad person thing is loving dumb and does worse than nothing for the cause of building a movement based on actually caring about the impact you have on the world.

Speaking of people being lovely about Asians, has anyone listed to the new NYT/Serial podcast about the Trojan Horse affair, entitled, appropriately, "The Trojan Horse Affair"? I moved to the UK a few years after it all wrapped up and had actually never heard of it before, so I went in completely blind. As a forensic investigation it's fascinating, though the conclusion is ultimately a bit unsatisfying; while I wasn't shocked much by what transpired, it was dismaying to hear how everything played out, and does a good job of illustrating how parochial disputes can easily be spun up into national political fodder, facts be damned. It also really highlighted to me that the age of the War on Terror is over, but so much of the damage it wrought -- and, of course, the careers of the people who were responsible for wreaking so much of it at higher levels of government -- persists. Post-Afghanistan, post-Iraq, post-ISIS, we're now moving into the phase of retrospective re-evaluation, and it's becoming abundantly clear the lunacy of the 15 years following 9/11 will not come off well in the historical record. Without spending a few hours clipping his older shows it's hard to put a cross the subtle difference, but I disagree with the idea that he's always been like this (or at least I agree that he's been like this, but not actually this), or that this is just a one-off bad joke. The Netflix special definitely marks a rightward turn into something more cynical and hateful.

I think the sections with news readers just going "radical islam, Muslim extremists" over and over is a pretty fair impression of what someone paying attention to news headlines and cycles got. the Muslim foster care hoax a little bit later was the same thing, except (some of) the media did make more of a point of mentioning that it was fake when it turned out to be fake. looking into it, it's probably because there was an actual press standards thing and the times had to issue a correction? anyway, if anyone hasn't listened to it, I'd definitely recommend it

The "joke" could have maybe worked if he'd specifically said "And I picked gypsies as the target because of how so many people hate them including all of you in the audience who laughed at it, as that group is still so marginalised and treated like poo poo, so we should all think about that next time someone casually jokes about what scum they are", but no, it's nothing quite that aware. He is allowed to tell poo poo nasty jokes but it's all the others lining up to defend it or pay him for it that are the real problem.

He was always going to be susceptible to that not because he's a shock-jock comedian but because the lack of any other substance to his act means there's no other place for him to go - and that he's definitely realised that and doesn't even bother honing the material any more. Like the Holocaust joke - 10 years ago he would have turned that into an attack on the crowd's attitude or at least taken it that one extra step of probing who it is and isn't acceptable to want exterminated. Now though all he has to do is say "Hurhur it's good that they died" because it gets the big laugh and he knows the Open Mike/Hat Trick/OTK mafia will close ranks behind him if he ever gets called out on it because ultimately if they don't they risk getting kicked out of the group of 20 or so acts who are more or less contractually obliged to be on any comedy show on British television.

Are induction hobs as reactive as gas? I really struggle where I'm not able to change the heat instantly, which is why I hate electric. I'm having to use them atm and it has been a ballache getting used to hobs that have 6 fixed heat settings and take ages to switch from one to the other.

I haven't used a gas hob but the induction ones are remarkably quick compared to electrics. It's a bit like magic, the pan itself just gets hot very quickly, which is the point, of course, but it does still feel like you have a magic self heating pan. The actual controls are usually the stupid touch screen crap which is unfortunate, but you might be able to get one with knobs?

I picked one up for 30 quid in the LIDL middle aisle while our kitchen was being demolished and it did the job
