Also, to be elected the Tory leader, you need to win a majority vote of the party members, and they're all the sort of people who a) firmly believe that Britain is still a world military power and b) actually care about what colour flag gets to fly over the Falklands. Truss has been regularly popping up in the media making grandstanding comments, posing with military hardware etc 'cos there's probably going to be a leadership contest soon and she wants to establish a prominent brand.

I'm almost done with "How China Escaped Shock Therapy" and one of the central ideas in the book was that despite all of the disciples of Hayek and Friedman telling them that they needed to do price liberalization in one "big bang" and all the other trapping of neoliberalism, they ultimately didn't do it not only because the West had zero leverage with which to tell them to do such a thing (and indeed it was China that sought out such "second opinions" when their economic discipline was picking back up in the 70s and 80s), but also because they were able to look at the experience of Yugoslavia and Hungary and the rest of Eastern Europe and South America, and they saw where it lead to, and knew well enough to back away.
