Friends, I want to like Elden Ring. It looks p good. But what's not good, is my skill at videogames. I couldn't get v far in any Dark Souls game, or Bloodborne. I played Sekiro and had fun, but never got past Lady Butterfly. I'm currently replaying Ghost of Tsushima on Hard (not Lethal+) and the difficulty feels pretty right in terms of balance of challenge for max fun. I'm down to be challenged and get better, if the movement is fun, but should I expect that I'm just going to get owned over and over if my ability at games is per above? Also, is the combat in Elden Ring looking like it's more fast/fluid/agile like Sekiro? Or slow and ponderous like DS?

They've said ER is probably going to be their easiest game yet, and the open world means you can probably spend more time leveling up against lower level bosses to make the big bosses a fair bit easier. Hard to tell exactly where the difficulty is going to land since they're going to be tweaking the balance all the way up to the launch but as someone who is also terrible at video games I'm actually pretty optimistic about this one.

I'm bad at video games and I've beat them all. From what we've seen there are all sorts of ways to make this easier than the other games (summons and such).

My guess is that early game will be difficult but an important part of the progression will be amassing an enormous collection of tools you can deploy against anything causing you trouble. So typical Souls stuff but accelerated with your arsenal scaling a lot faster as rewards for exploring accumulate.

People talk a lot of poo poo about reusing animations, art work, etc by FromSoft. But I'm still angrily playing BF2042 which still doesn't have a traditional scoreboard and won't have one until March, plus is missing a boatload of things that their prior 4 games did pretty well. So maybe there's something to be said for it.

I am going to roll a quality knight or a dex stabby guy and just slam my head against everything in the game. The spells look insane but I want to save those for replays.

I’m planning to make a Faith build first, before From gets a chance to nerf it (come on PvPers, just let us PvEers have the fun stuff. Go play GG strive or something; it has actual rollback net code). Also using hammers/big axes since I have never used those weapon classes. I guess I used the Mirdan Hammer in DeS, but that’s more of a halberd that does blunt damage. Also DeS is brutal in regards to big weapons bouncing off of walls. So many narrow hallways and narrow paths with walls on the right hand side.

The best thing about a new fromsoftware game is the huge online community for the first couple of months, so even if you suck hard there'll always be the option to summon people to help with anything giving you a hard time.

From the interviews this sounds like it’ll be the easiest Souls game to date. They really wanted to keep the core of the game fun and accessible and it seems that they buried the infamous “souls-like difficulty” on the optional/open paths you can choose to explore (or ignore). So it might work out in a favorable loop where you just focus on the main story / areas and have an easier time progressing and as you get stronger you can branch out and go find a more difficult challenge.

Difficulty wise taking action RPGs as a whole I've never taken a fraction as long to figure out Dark Souls bosses, even the optional DLC ones, as Lingering Will in KH2 (and that was on KH2's normal difficulty).

i'm kind of curious, when breath of the wild came out was it considered "the hardest" zelda game because enemies could kill you in one hit at first and you could jump straight to the castle if you wanted to? because if that's what they're shooting for with elden ring it makes sense to me that the sweet spot for "easiest souls game" could be "hardest zelda"

I always roll Deprived not because I'm some difficulty freak, I cheese freely, but because my favorite part of any RPG is the start of gearing up where you equip anything you can because it fills up a slot. Starting with real weapons and spells and armor just feels wrong.

# ? Feb 7, 2022 19:38 |

similarly i've picked deprived most times because of the flat stat split, which while suboptimal for min-maxers, makes it easier for me to splash around a bit and find what i want to use

I suspect this is all going to fall over hard shortly and get into the "it's great once you hit 80 or so Int!" category. It's still very much a challenge run. I just did a run, Magic is loving trivial in base DS3. Basic and heavy soul arrows can handle anything in the first two levels and Orbeck's will chump everything else until soul spear. There is very little challenge when you don't have to approach enemies like fire witches and anything melee enters range with less than half their hp. Not to mention the level of abuse you can perform with pestilent mist. I always knew this poo poo was overblown
