I don’t know why motorsport insists on considering fuel cell cars to be the future, every racing prototype is either sluggish or has worse range than battery electric

A small team ran an electric conversion sports racer at the 25hr of Thunderhill this year. They made 14 laps per charge (3mi track) and had a battery rack that was pinned and bolted so a battery cart could be keyed into it, couple of bolts undone, rack pulled, and another rack of batteries bolted in.

Toyota hydrogen endurance race last year had their pit stops be double the duration(and half the range) of a standard petrol racer. I think that the nio ep9 with the side removable batteries could be pitted faster than their hydrogen car with a decent pit crew.

I dont think motorsport actually does insist on fuel cell future, it's more EV race cars in some situations have problems that cant as yet be overcome plus more importantly some high profile car manufactuers / suppliers have taken huge bets on hydrogen that they are wanting to see return on and trying to make fuel cell / hydrogen be an actual thing.

TBH I think most motorsports are more less expecting either alcohols / synth fuel with or without hybrids to take over for longer events and EV's to keep proving they are becoming next to unbeatable in stuff like hillclimbs and lap sprints

Yeah old thinkpads can hot-swap packs while on mains. I *think* the pre-magsafe macs could do this too.

With an electric car it could be wicked easy. keep a 12-48V battery onboard to keep the controllers alive while the main pack gets hot swapped.

:colbert:

My ancient dell Laptop had a complete hot-swappable battery when on AC, but ~2016 MSI Desktop replacement (GT72 w/GTX 970M) has one that literally requires the entire computer to be taken apart to access, and even then held in with copious amounts of double sided tape, which I did on the weekend. I was able to take it apart without removing the heatsinks, but barely.

If the battery ever dies on my Surface Pro, pretty sure its just going to end up as e-waste. Zero clue how to even open it.

Like a lot of tablets, it's glued together. They are barely worth trying to repair, because it's really likely you're gonna break the screen unless you have a full on pro heat table.

I've spent hours heating and then jamming guitar picks between screens and bezels opening crap like that in the past and I'm so over it.

An 18650 battery is 18mmx65mm so this would be, what, a couple 36013000 batteries?

I really like the idea of the pit stop being a car rotisserie where they flip the car over, pop open the hatch, and pull out and 3-4 giant cylindrical batteries, replace cover, and put it back on on its wheels. Preferably with the driver inside the whole time.

E: I checked the ifixit guide for replacing the battery in my surface pro 3 and, well, it's just going to spend the rest of its life tethered to the wall. I'm kind of surprised it can still go 1-2 hours unplugged after nearly 8 years (holy poo poo... If someone had walked up and asked me how long I had had that thing I would have been like idk 4 years?)

Thinkpad T450s? Maybe T460s? I forget which has the removable, but the T460 was the last with the bottom dock connector, as I recall.
Also, that asset tag looks very familiar, though, to be honest, it seems like that's a common size for them.

ACO(lemans) has gone thru the effort of setting up a whole class with standardized parts for fuel cells and so on to be raced in 2024. They expect their flagship lmp vehicles to be gone while these become the norm. Total is pulling every string they can to have hydrogen classes or special vehicles in french-aligned motorsports(like this years hydrogen truck which had a lot of press on it)

I see you're also a Thinkpad connoisseur, because that is, in fact, a T460. The tag might be familiar, it's a huge megacorp, but maybe they all buy them from the same sticker store or something.
