At the peak of the dotcom boom someone paying six figures for a good URL would get reported on the evening news. Everyone else had long unmemorable URLs like www.boringhost.net/dullsite/users/~ken/www/index.html

There were people that honestly thought domain names were a finite resource, and if you weren't an early adopter you'd be stuck with awful ones. Though it did lead to fun things like Whitehouse.com being a porn site for a few years.

I worked for commerce.state.mt.us for a while in the late 90s, and I used to hide MP3s in directories that were like 15 layers deep, thanks to some random division having an alphabet soup of options. Like, /sdbg/cbg/blockgrants/tbg/music/ Not like you'd know how to get to them without a link, and robot crawlers were easier to avoid back then.

I can't think of another living human being who so thoroughly destroyed his life and reputation because someone didn't like some jokes he wrote. The actual IT Crowd episode in question is kind of gross, not from a point of cruelty or malice just dumb gag humor using a trans person for cheap laughs, but the moment people went "hey that's kind of hosed up" Linehan went so nuts over it that it's at the point when he's being talked about in the media as a "British" celebrity the rest of Irish twitter just gives them a pass to not correct it.

I mean, is JK Rowling still raking in tons of money from HP? I remember reading some weird "Transgenders For Rowling" Facebook page, which feels a lot like a spoof, but there's so many snips of the books where "there's a staircase to this tower and only girls can go up it, so what if a trans boy went up the stairs and realized at the top OMG I knew I was a girl!" or something with unicorns, "and this trans boy knows they only like girls but what if a unicorn came up and sat by him and it was proof he really was a she and it wasn't all in her head." seem to try to justify that Rowling really isn't so hateful? But none of that poo poo is IN her books, any more than Dumbledore being gay is. It's all fanon, and it seems to give some people the ammo of "I can love the art and dislike the artist" poo poo.

Warner Bros, who put out all the Harry Potter stuff that's not the books, has been trying to minimize her involvement for a while. The next movie has a cowriter (the first two Fantastic Beasts movies were all solo written by Rowling) and the recent movie anniversary special did not invite Rowling to participate while making a point to indicate that any footage which contained her was pre-unmasking as a TERF.

I mean there was at least a reason behind his TERF-ery, (There was some famous TERF woman he had a crush on, and also the stuff about him getting butthurt about people rightfully calling him out on the misogyny of his jokes in that IT Crowd episode). Not a good reason, and the kind of reason only someone who was already an arsehole would pursue. But a reason nevertheless. What on God's green earth could possibly persuade someone to suddenly pick up Holocaust denial? Also, that poo poo generally shows itself so much earlier in the form of anti-semitism, racism, and weirdo conspiracy theory believing.
