Right to buy could have probably been done in a sustainable way where that £11k all went into building more social housing and buy-to-let was discouraged, but even that way of building a generation of homeowners was too much like socialism so instead you get markets for the market god and a generation of never being able to be homeowners (or council tenants either).

Yeah I managed to afford a house because my dad loving died and we sold his house. That's about it. Without it we'd be renting. My sister couldn't afford it in london and the money she got from the house sale is almost all gone years later due to rent increasing. We still had to pay several grand for a disposal company to remove the giant underground oil tank he'd buried in his back garden because he was a weird boomer who believed in the end times and wanted a fuel supply for when Russia invaded and we couldn't go outside because "the liberals" laid down and did nothing. (ha..ha hahahaha gently caress) I miss the bastard a lot, even though politically I disagreed with him on nearly everything. Growing up hearing him say "I'm an old Tory! Labour spends, Tories save that's all there is to it!" over and over. It's no wonder I was a lovely liberal as a young adult. Speaking of lovely liberals and calling the cops... Could do with some thread reassurance/advice. I have a friend who's having some real problems at the place where she works, she's a tattooist and her co-worker is bit of a weird DOTA playing internet shitlord. Odd sort, but wasn't anything too offensive. Just all the tact and personal skills you'd expect from someone who proudly announces they like to own people in DOTA. He would give her lots of unsolicited advice and try and 'mentor' her, often infront of clients. This culminated in him being somewhat lovely to a client's friend who was making sure she was OK. My friend wrote to him afterwards (as he went on holiday) and asked him to please not do that and respect her clients and predictably he went off like a nuclear warhead. Giving her poo poo about how dare she say that to him, she's just an apprentice and should be thankful yadda yadda. She screenshotted it all and then blocked him on IM. He then makes a new account on instagram and basically nukes her inbox with some absolutely awful, abusive, insane poo poo. Threatening to make her life hell, how he's going to make her scrub the floors with a toothbrush etc. Not to even look at her when he's back or he'll destroy her etc etc. All the usual tropes of insecure manchild online argument, except in text to someone he works next to... loving what. So she tells my wife and I and we immediately say call 101 and report harassment (two sets of messages, circumventing blocking, feeling threatened etc.) but she doesn't want to cause trouble for the studio. We convince her to take it all to her boss and she does. He says he wants to sit them down when he's back and talk it all out and if he doesn't apologise he's fired...like you can apologise for that poo poo. Apparently abusive shitlord also wrote to the boss and threatened the boss with a load of poo poo too but the boss won't immediately fire him (???), the boss believes in talking face to face with everyone first. We find out the abusive guy used to have screaming arguments in the back alley with his GF on the phone and punch trashcans etc. Totally great idea to put him in the same room as the person he's currently angry at, especially if he gets fired which might not even loving happen! I've told her she really shouldn't go to that meeting without her partner IN the room, if she should even go at all and honestly she should probably just look for another job because if her boss doesn't 100% support her... not to mention violent guy who gets fired and knows where she works, when she works late, is often alone in the studio which isn't locked and walks alone to her car in an isolated car park? gently caress that. Her partner wants her to quit right now and I don't blame him. How do restraining orders work? How do you actually prevent an act of violence occurring to someone when they are being harassed and the person is clearly unstable and violent but hasn't actually 'done' anything yet.

The boss is going to ignore and excuse any acts of aggression out of an overriding need to be fair and give the tosser a chance. She's better off leaving. Outside of that, the only way she's going to remain safe is to make sure that the security around the site is improved, and that the riskier elements are mitigated. Pepper spray might be an idea too. It's loving poo poo though, regardless. I was able to afford a house via a loan. And living in a low density area. Now my nephew is 21 now I think, works in construction now and has worked as a truck driver, he and his fiance just bought their own house. Infact it's a farmstead from 1840. It bodes well I think that a blue collar worker can afford a house at that age. Though it's not near a city, they did not want that.

I don't want to say I'm lucky to have bought a house because it required my mother in law dying young of cancer, leaving us half a house we shared for 10 years with my sister-in-law, and a global pandemic / murderous conservative government who froze stamp duty. But under normal circumstances and without the hell my wife went through, there is no way my useless rear end would ever be owning a house. It's mostly BTL landlords who are able to take advantage of government schemes, and new estates can quickly get snapped up by these parasites. I remember there was a development in the centre of Totnes of 20 new rabbit hutches, designed for first time buyers. 19 of them were instantly snapped up by the same BTL leech, and he would have got the other one had a first time buyer couple not waited in front of the sales office a couple of hours before it opened on the first day. Those houses were immediately made available on the rental market for top notch market rates. The entire system is hosed.

Criminal law: don't know much about it but that sounds like criminal harassment to me. Which cops are very well known for pretending to be a civil issue (it's both) & refusing to do anything about, and when they do do anything about it often just end up making it worse. Imo this is one of the rare situations where it's worth talking to pigs though, just to get it on record to protect her position in case things escalate. (e: if pigs try to deflect, s2 Protection from Harassment Act is where you need to point them) Restraining orders: no idea legally, but my personal experience of how they work is "they don't" Employment law: if the boss doesn't do anything about it that sounds like textbook constructive dismissal (if she resigns). That's a big escalation though, so she should definitely get advise first (ACAS helpline is probably a good starting place), & start off by trying to resolve it informally & then raise a formal grievance.

In our old uni town (Winchester) there was a student landlord who everyone joked about playing monopoly with the cheap houses in Stanmore. The place we were renting was from a couple who moved abroad and weren't sure if they were going to sell, then toward the end of the tenancy they announced they were selling. We had a few people come round to look; a kid who was going to study at Winchester and no poo poo his dad wanted to buy it 'as a party house for him and his friends,' a family who needed the extra bedroom, and a couple from down the road who clearly wanted to just nose around. None of them got it because Veasey contacted the seller and offered them 10k over whatever the highest bid was, cash, sight unseen. He owned next door either side and wanted to knock through the gardens apparently. It's a completely different world. My friend remembers Mrs Veasey coming round to check the maintenence work and complaining to a room full of students that they couldn't afford a 'proper' 2nd holiday so were going to just spend a week on the yacht. loving parasites.

Source: similar poo poo in NHS with a big, fancy harassment policy that did nothing and management continually trying to bury complaints against bully boss and bully co-worker (not bullying me but others) until the police were called directly by witnesses (angering the management who had done nothing after numerous complaints from frankly terrified women working alone - or so they thought - at night. Call the cops next time he does it. Might put the frighteners on him. And yes, would be ideal if she could leave and find another job but may be difficult especially as there'll be no reference.

Also sounds like one of those times you want to write everything down in a notebook, as it happens. Which people forget because a) it seems very memorable at the time and b) "some stuff you wrote down" doesn't seem like very good evidence. But when you're having a court case or tribunal, being able whip out a list of incidents with time and date is quite compelling.

i live in a small city in canada and housing prices have jumped here, too. since we were lucky enough to buy a few years ago, the average housing price has literally almost tripled. i doubt we could afford to buy our house today and we bought one of the smallest houses on the street. i guess theoretically we could take out a heloc and invest that but ew no. it’s really brutal and i have no idea what people are going to do in the next decade. It's an MMF pyramid scam, and in such a scam there are only scammers and bagholders. But nobody ever gets involved in a pyramid scheme thinking that they will be the ones left holding the bag.
