For 28+2 FC you want 6 on stone, the last 2 dark age villagers go to stone, then you move 2 from sheep/boar to stone once you click feudal, and your 2 transition villagers in feudal go to stone as well.

I have a spreadsheet with some (probably outdated) AoE2 build orders that indicates 5 on berries, but I'm pretty sure you could get away with 4 (especially if you can manage to lure a deer or two). I haven't done the build (or played aoe2) in quite some time though.

In addition to the advice above, which is very good advice, when you start making a unit ask yourself which units your opponent can possibly make to counter what you're about to do. Then ask yourself which one he probably will make; if you're making archers your opponent might make scouts or skirms, but if he's French then he's probably going to make scouts, for example. While you should always try to scout to confirm both what he's going to do and when he's going to do it, being aware of what his possibilities are right away can lead you in the right direction.

Incidentally, this advice is applicable to almost all RTS games. Be aware of what counters your unit, and be ready to start making the counter-counter before you need it.

New event going on everybody. It involves co-op so you'd probably best get on it early in case it's difficult to partner up towards the end.

Goths on hard and up actually are pretty hard if you let them develop their eco. I made the mistake of dicking around while playing them with khmer and realized much too late how serious they could be. Probably 100 straight wins against the hard comp then ended up getting my rear end kicked by fifty thousand champs and halbs. Don't waste your time with ballista elephants imo. God I hate them

Abbasids mostly just need house of wisdom tech costs decreased, 1000 resources for the trade or economy wing is a lot of time to pay it back.

Camel archers also should cost closer to 120 then 240 since they don't trade well against anything and aren't worth bringing for anything but auras, Wouldn't hurt camel riders to be slightly less poo poo against none-knights too.

Oh and less completely garbage tier naval units wouldn't hurt either now that I think of it.

I don't think there are any noticeable bugs that affect them directly, they're just subpar compared to the other civs since a lot of their options are simply mediocre in comparison.

I've still had a lot of success with them, but it always feels like you have to try way harder than your opponents to be successful, maybe due to having to wait (and pay) for your age-up landmark bonuses instead of getting them outright like everyone else, and the bonuses themselves aren't anything to write home about either.

Yeah house of wisdom's main problem is there isn't a single line where you can really say "yeah, all 4 of these techs are real bangers" there are usually multiple duds in each one or are just priced out of usefulness.

There are a lot of players playing ranked that don't even come close to beating the extreme AI.

AoE2's AI has had 20 years of development and is surprisingly capable, don't let that be a deterrent to enjoying multiplayer games!

e: for reference the Extreme AI is said to be around 1100-1200 Elo, which according to this chart, is better than ~70% of active ranked players

This is absolutely true. They will spread all over a map, generally lumbercamps and it takes forever to convince them to quit. I will say the best lesson the harder AIs can impart is the importance of feudal age action and even of drushing. You don't pressure them, you're gonna have a huge fight on your hands; they're actually very good at never letting vills or TC idle

The video someone else posted is blocked for me so I'll answer, Elo is a skill rating system most commonly used in Chess, and later adopted by other competitive games.

TO put it simply, you are assigned a point value and for each game you play you gain/lose points based on the delta of your point value and your opponent's. Your rating is then used by matchmaking to pair you up with opponents with similar ratings, it's surprisingly accurate at finding opponents of similar skill.

You can read more about it here.

Latest patch notes up. Will be out this week. A very slight nerf to fishing and siege weapons will now deal bonus damage vs ships. Presumably, river maps will no longer be dominated by ships blockading the fords. Still no map vetos out so not sure how much longer I'll be sticking around with CK 3 expansion releasing tommorrow and Warhammer 3 coming up soon after that. The 1 v 1 scene is actually very good on their land maps. But the moment you add in even river hybrid, it is like the game is chopped in half where feudal gameplay is nonexistant as there is no counterplay to dark age dock and tech and the games turn super defensive until everyone is at Imp and ready rumble with endgame comps. I feel like its literally two different games sometimes.

Cavalry getting +10 damage against siege is nice, scout +10 food and doesn't get the torch damage however so they might not get spammed for just the cost effective wall of health as much.
Hoping that combined with siege moving slower and bombards having less HP will do something about the siege blobs that dominate the imperial age.

But yeah they REALLY need to add a ban preference because they did a really bad job on every map that isn't pure land and even land has some stinkers like black forest.

During a live stream yesterday they also said that they are removing Warring Islands and Archipelago from quick play in this update as they continue to iterate on water gameplay (and these are the two most dodged maps) in future updates.

Very good patch. Slightly concerned they over nerfed siege.

Mongols only getting a minor nerf to the raid mechanic is a bit weird. Did that thing ever really matter that much in ranked play?

Now that one of the 'stronger' civs, china, is nerfed and Delhi is again buffed I'm starting to think Delhi and Mongols will be sharing S+ tier.

Seige is still exceptionally powerful. Part of the reason why fast castle strategies are so prevalent even on land only maps where economies are far more vulnerable to raiding is that seige weapons even in small numbers can instantly invalidate armies stuck in the feudal age since the hard counter to seige weapons is also only available in Castle age. A player doing French, English, or Mongol feudal harass has an exceedingly tight time window to execute and damage the opposition economy or use rams to force a victory since even a single mangonel can allow the player on the back foot to instantly push back on any type of map control that they lost while they turtled to Castle. This isn't a case where the player fast castling successfully gains equality vs the player who chose to go for feudal map control and harass strategy. This is a case of the player who successfully executes a fast castling strategy having an overwhelming advantage on the player who is now likely stuck at feudal age for a significant period of time and has no remotely cost-effective answer to a mangonel. Also since springalds are still the best counter to other springalds, the fast castle strategy has a head start on massing springalds and the appropriate meatshields for their seige. If you have a feudal army, one micro mistake and your ball eating a mango volley is effectively game over.

This is why the dock meta on hybrid maps is so toxic. Because ships are so tanky and heal near their docks, it is next to impossible to punish their food gathering and all they need is a minor wall off on the closest ford and maybe a tower on their first gold patch and it is neigh impossible to punish a fast castle strat. Not to mention this is also effectively a double TC dark age boom stapled on to the fast castle since fishing boats are effectively just villagers that can only harvest food. You see now why the hybrid maps effectively mean there is no feudal age gameplay. It was already hard enough on land-only maps to punish fast castle or double TC booms when played by competent players who know how to maximize their tower coverage.

Now there isn't anything inherently wrong with this. You can say that AoE 4 is a SimCity to castle/imperial age game and that the design choice is to favour boom and tech strats. You wouldn't be wrong and you can chalk this up to it being a MikeC problem. But from the insane number of dodges on water maps and even hybrid maps (it is often a game of chicken in Quick match to see who will be the one to Alt-f4) makes it clear in my mind that I am not in the significant minority here. The player base is similarly dropping. At the 1200-1300 elo bracket when I play, we dodge the same maps over and over, and its familiar faces many nights.

So why is DE so slow? It looks drat good while still retaining the look of the original. But it doesn't look freeze for 15 seconds good. If I close absolutely everything including the steam overlay and my virus scanner and chrome it's about a 50% chance of running fine for a single game. After that I'll have to close it and restart. This is not a gaming comp but the base game is over two decades old. Was it just poorly optimized to get it out the door on time? People with way better comps than me have complained about it too, and from what I gather forget playing it on a laptop. Just frustrating. And what's weird is it seems to be getting worse, not better; I'm well over half way to 1000 hours and I don't remember this for the first few hundred
