I actually had to make a strat specifically for him to get past consistently, which was to stand under his bullets to lure him into jumping over onto the roof, then swap places with him when he jumps down so he'll walk off the edge looking for me

Having only two spawn points per level means you're always having to trek over stuff you've done already, and the gameplay also involves a lot of waiting for opportunities to progress. So it makes you impatient to get back to try again, then punishes you for acting impatiently. On top of that there's the combination of one hit kills with enemies that appear without much warning, so you're paranoid the whole time
