If I need to I can print this object 250mm high then print something 3mm and put it on top (this is literally just going to be a cylinder to support something) to hit the exact measurement I'm going for but I'm curious if there is a trick or something to squeeze a few extra mm out? Is there any gotchas to watch out for when printing something that is exactly the max height at 250mm? try removing the feet on the bottom of the printer. E: oof, lovely snype. Well I said gently caress it and started the print last night with an exact height of 250mm. It'll be done in a couple of hours. Looking at it now I am worried the main problem is when it gets to the higher parts the bowden tube coming out of the top of the extruder is going to scrape against the top gantry thing and gently caress the print up. So far so good tho. Yeah this definitely could have been done much easier and better with a 2x4 but I got this fancy printer and this also gave me the opportunity to create my own model from scratch for the first time. Also a 2x4 would not match and look much uglier and I have my wife's OCD to consider.

uhhh you might want to raise your gantry as high as it will actually go, and measure because the bowden tube and wire harness gets VERY tight up there, and as mentioned, there is a lift of the z height at the end, so you may knock the print off the bed as it homes / displays the print at the end. I believe the leadscrew has more to it, so adding a spacer to the top of the gantry sides the top bar can rest on (or replace the top bar with a new printed top bar with extra z height, just to keep the sides aligned. But your 'extra' 3mm turns into an extra 3mm + whatever height you actually need to get to to physically make a 252mm object. You may also need to pull the leadscrew out of the coupling a bit to get that little bit of height. (Or just print it in 2 parts, its easy to raise / lower the part in the slicer to start at layer x for the top half, the bottom part might just be the original part stopped at layer x, or do you need a top surface to glue vs outer wall and infill?) (Or just print the single object in two parts at the same time, but this can show some quality issues going back and forth between the two parts if your retraction is not up to par)

I'm watching it pretty closely and started it assuming there was decent odds I'm gonna have to stop it/fail at the very end, but I figured they say 250mm out of the box so I should be able to print something 250mm high without having to make any changes. Like if you can't actually do 250mm because of the homing at the end or the bowden tube compressing up against the top gantry too much then I would expect a normal person would put the max height out of box at a lower value and not at something undoable. But yeah I realize that's a lot to expect because we can't have nice things. I'll report back on this experiment in a couple of hours.

Well I know the max travel limits are more than the printable size they claim. The x/y values they give for max print size are like 10-15mm less than what is possible for this size bed because you are likely to run up against things like the bed clip so if they've used that thought process to decide the x/y max print size I would assume they did the same for the vertical print size by taking in the top gantry into account. But again I do realize I'm just as likely to be wrong and the marketing people hosed it up.

You can test the actual height limit of your machine by using the control panel to zero it out, then manually commanding it to move up in 10 mm increments until it hits something, watching the readout on the display or just counting the steps. Or you can just slice something that's a little bit too tall and print it and see what happens. yolo

It looks like the maker of the original collapsing katana print in place sword updated the design to allow a removable blade, and included the bottom of the hilt to have a pla spring loaded clasp to hold it all together. Alright. The 250mm print was a success! I only hit one snag. At about 96% the extruder knob ran into the print spool attachment on the upper rail which I failed to consider. I was just across the room so I was able to run over and pause it then move the spool over and resume it. I was printing at 120mm/s so even being across the room it messed up one layer enough that on resume the subsequent layers had a bit of trouble but then corrected itself fast enough to not compromise the print. After testing it out on what I am supporting I am short of where I would like to be height wise about 3.5-4mm. Here is what it looks like when the print finished and it retracted off and moved over: It has 4mm of additional room from where it is in the pic and maybe a .1-.2mm extra with that cover knob pulled off. I need to print two of these so I'm gonna yolo again and print the next one 3.5mm higher which should give it enough clearance to retract and home when finished. For this one I'll just print a 3.5mm height disk to give it the extra height. So in conclusion, as long as your extruder knob is not going to hit your printer spool attachment the Ender 3 V2 has no problem at all printing at it's max 250mm height. I'll report back on how increasing it to 253.5mm works out. And yes, I know I don't need to push it as there are other ways to get what I need but damnit now I'm just interested in seeing if I can even if I probably shouldn't. Edit: I will wait until tomorrow morning to start the print however since it's about a 14 hour print time and I will be asleep when it finishes. Want to be able to monitor the last few layers. Testing out the strength of the one I printed I can shave off a decent bit of the inner wall and it will still be strong enough though so I can probably get it printing in 11-12 hours but still be plan to be asleep then. Pretty sure they've fixed the XT60 connector issue though.

Does anyone have a good brand recommendation for transparent PLA? The Hatchbox stuff is pretty bad, even though the rest of their filament is really good, the transparent stuff is brittle and breaks all the time.

MK3S+ kit build took about 8 1/2 hours. A few hitches, nothing serious. One of the linear bearings got rough (the one by itself on one of the Y axis rods), and it feels a bit rough when moved. Doesn't seem to be a problem, though. Overall, was a bit more difficult than I was expecting, factoring in my previous experience building a printer once before. Just minor things like difficulty accessing something, and of course fitting nuts into printed parts. I'm quite happy with the automated setup. That took less effort on my part than I was expecting. Having the first layer calibration being built-in and guided is quite nice. First print, really thrilled with the quality. The layers are very even, though it might not look so much like it, but it's a combination of photography and the included silver PLA that makes the layer lines themselves pop a little more. Only issue is that my first layer needs a bit more tweaking, just needs to be a slightly closer.

Kind of like the light diffusing panels put on fluorescent lights in an office building. It certainly won't look as good as transparent PETT, at any rate. I was looking for a clever PLA to print the Makergear Micro printer in. I found this Glass Transparent Blue stuff at microcenter. I bought two rolls of it. I fought through a full kilogram before returning "both" spools. (Yes, I got a refund on an empty spool..) The stuff would spit, string, puff, and do every bad behavior you've seen from nylon.... but.. it was PLA? Baking it would solve the problem, but over the course of 8 hours, it would get wet enough to be unprintable again. It absorbed water faster than TPU. So... it's.. not.. PLA. It was advertised as PLA, but nothing about it was ~pla~ except for print temperatures.

I've had good results with Filamentum Crystal Clear, but with a bunch of caveats: - it's not "transparent" except in very specific circumstances. If you're printing one, maybe two horizontal layers, it's clear, otherwise it's smoky and translucent. If you're printing perimeters in spiral vase mode you can, with some tweaking, get something that's closer to transparent but it's probably still not going to be as good as this, and you're never going to get, like, pane-of-glass transparency. Anything thick enough to be useful structurally is not going to be transparent in any useful sense. Here is a photo of some game box organizers printed with translucent blue PLA; you can see that the infill anchors are visible through the outer perimeter but you really can't see the contents of each box, and making it thin enough that you can would have seriously compromised it structurally. - it's a bit more finicky to print than most other PLAs; in particular it loves stringing, but it's often grumpier about adhesion as well and I've had more jamming/feed issues with it than anything else I've printed. - it's very brittle. If you leave it sitting in the printer idle for any length of time it is likely to snap in the feed tube. TL;DR if you insist on transparent PLA I'd cautiously recommend Filamentum but you are probably better off getting a different type of plastic.

Welp my Sunon 4020 part cooling fan already died... it wasn't really running too well at low speeds anyhow so I had a feeling it may see a short life. Lasted less than a month I have some 4010 (non blower) fans that are supposed to be higher RPM but I kind of doubt it moves much air for part cooling. Any suggestions on what to go with next? 4010 blower fans with hero me shroud? Or go crazy with the 5015's. I routinely slice 20x20x20 cubes at shorter Z heights. In some optimization/troubleshooting instances, once I get to 5mm height I'm good, and going further is just wasting time and material.

Random question, but you know those 2-filaments-1-nozzle type hotends (e.g. https://www.tronxy.com/product/2e-heating-kit/)? Do they allow you to blend filaments on-the-fly or does it have to be just one or the other? I *assume* it's one or the other otherwise you run the risk of all kinds of weird blockage and feed problems if the two paths cross in the actual heated area, but I feel like you could do some really interesting stuff if someone did actually make one that allowed you to do, say, 25% of one colour filament and 75% of another, and move those ratios around as you print.

Hoping I can get some advice on this: Friend wants me to print this out. It's pretty tiny - maybe about 25mm cubed. I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this without having the dice faces on the bottom get all weird. Is this, like, super overkill? Is there a smarter way of approaching this? I know I could cut the thing in half and put the numbered sides all facing away from the support sides, but they're hoping I can make this in a single solid piece.
