But I’m not renting it. TTYD is better though.

Felter Chesthard posted:I just finished Skyward Sword last night. I've seen pretty much everyone rank it as one of the worst Zeldas but I actually really enjoyed it. Disclaimer: I played Link to the Past and BotW but missed everything in between so maybe even a bad Zelda is good. That's super interesting. I think LA's plays worse than LttP, but it has just oodles of charm, which the remake amplifies to 11. Plus, the story is far more poignant versus the very boiler-plate plot LttP gives you. Skyward Sword isn't great, and I enjoyed it more as cool way to see where BotW came from. I may have enjoyed it more otherwise, but just that experience was enough for me. It's certainly a unique game and the dungeons and level lay-out is fun, but there are just so many missteps and genuinely unfun things in the game from the empty sky, to the repetitive boss fights, to the wholly dull but involved combat. But still, if you enjoyed it that's the best case scenario. I'd be curious what you'd think of Wind Waker since for me it has a lot of SS's best aspects and then some. MM is excellent, but if you didn't appreciate the character of LA then MM may pass you by. The gameplay is terrific and it has some excellent dungeons and sequences, but what puts it so high in consideration is it's characterization and mood. If you want something more standard that still retains good gameplay (arguably a bit worse than MM) try Ocarina of Time.

Yeah this is why I dropped it, verbatim. That being said I know in my heart I need to go back and actually finish it before XB3, though. I watched some video by chuggaconroy though and now I know the power of the common blades so I probably will have a better time

Nah, I agree. The perfect game would be to combine the two, and trim a lot of extras, because WOW does TTYD have a lot of overused backtracking. I love it, but aaaauuuuggggh.

Ignorance is saving me on that one since I've never played any Paper Mario, aside from Super Paper Mario, so I can't miss what I never knew. I must be really mixed on the Paper Mario Games, but I keep trying them. I loved Super Mario RPG and Origami King, but hated Superstar Saga and Super Paper Mario. Super Paper Mario was the only game I ever sold when I was finished, because I knew I never wanted to play that game again. Sometimes the games just go on like 10 hours more than they should, and the battle mechanics are so basic and easy to win fights that it bores me. I've never played Paper Mario on the N64 and wondering if it's worth trying

The duality of man that exists with Xenoblade 2 is down to it having a good game in there, but drowned under catastrophically bad decisions and a total contempt for the value of your time. And the loving anime. I still have good memories of Xenoblade 1, so I'll wait until the sensible reviews come out.

just saw the live a live trailer and, my god, that looks fantastic. it might have the best art style of any jrpg i've seen? i would happily spend hundreds of dollars on each of chrono trigger, ff6, and smrpg done in that style. wow, i love that. also, did nintendo ever patch up the switch release of ocarina of time? i remember this thread going off on the initial release and its egregious issues.

xenoblade 2 is a game with a good core gameplay loop and a mostly alright cast of characters with a plot that occasionally rises out of the ocean of self-indulgent bullshit it spends most of its time wallowing in to do something halfway interesting. it's interesting in places, and it's usually pretty decent to actually play, but the game indulges itself in a way that was grating enough of the time that I ended up dropping it after getting a new tutorial popup 100 hours in after a handful of cutscenes that didn't feel like they served any purpose and just dragged things out even longer.

I like RPG's and would like to play the Xenoblade 1 re-release but I have a question about it. How does your character's power advancement manifest itself? For example, in Diablo, you have builds that come from leveling which gives you access to skills, and you get better gear over time which dictates how powerful those skills are. That's plainly obvious with Diablo, but I've never really seen anybody showcase anything about how player progression works in Xenoblade. You see plenty about the world, the characters, and small tutorials about how combat works, but not about how you advance in power and capability over time. Do you get better armor that looks progressively cooler? Different weapons? More expansive combat options per character build? GreatGreen fucked around with this message at 21:02 on Feb 11, 2022 |

GreatGreen posted:Yes, I'm very aware of that, thanks. I've seen video of Xenoblade's combat. I didn't just see the cover art and decide to ask about it just based on that. The specifics vary, but generally speaking: leveling up gets you better stats, skill points (sometimes earned from leveling, sometimes from sidequests and stuff) lets you improve your skills, and you can both get new gear with better stats, and slot gems into gear to get various bonuses. There's also normally a customizable set of passive skills to mess with.

GreatGreen posted:I like RPG's and would like to play the Xenoblade 1 re-release but I have a question about it. You get 3 types of xp: character levels, weapon skills to increase, and character talents/passives. Gear and gems to enhance said gear. There's a friendship system that allows each character to equip talents from other characters, gated by friendship levels and how many named monsters you kill. And gear in the original made you look like a clown, but you can choose your appearance in the remaster. It's super complex and doesn't really matter if you just outlevel enemies by even a little bit.
