Occultism being another common trope with them for the same (albeit far smaller scaled irl) reason. In those stories, occultism is usually a matter of the lack of scruples, where the Nazi scientists figure out how to summon demons by brute-forcing the rituals, sacrificing thousands in the process, while the heroic Americans would never steep so low. Same goes to weird medical procedures which would discard uncountably many test subjects. That sort of logic doesn't really work for inventing racists Iron Man armor, or pocket dimensions, unless those are fueled by puppy-tears or something like that. cant cook creole bream fucked around with this message at 21:35 on Feb 12, 2022 |

It's in line with The White Dragon from the comics, he just didn't have any children. Gunn added that wrinkle and probably made him a lovely trailer trash guy on top of it as to not make his character look good in any way IIRC the comic book Peacemaker also had a racist dad that abused him but he didn't really have any abilities. that nazi troupe can be historically misleading as well, as the famous RL nazi doctors who didnt give a gently caress about ethics for "races" they dehumanised had piss poor methodologies too. Even to begin with, as malnourished concentration camp inmates are hardly representative of humans in general, and from there worked backwards with certain bunk racial assumptions. Helps the common misconception that their ethical disregard "gave results/got the job done" at a inhumane cost.

I think there's only a handful of them that that's true for anyway and it was mostly the ones the US swept their pasts under the rug for when they put them on the space race team. Von Braun did sort of do a 180 on his past when he supported the 60s civil rights movement, I guess. He never had to pay for his transgressions as a member of Hitler's inner circle though. Evidence indicates Von Braun was forced to join the SS officially to keep his job. Even before the war, it was very hard to hold even a teaching or bus driving position without joining the Nazi Party. Denazification was very difficult because of how much work it took to figure out who was a real Nazi.

yea the whole 'well he was maybe forced to be in the SS' thing kinda gets overshadowed by the fact he literally used concentration camps to build his rockets and was famously a pretty loving brutal taskmaster about it. It also doesn't help that the main source for that is Von Braun himself saying 'oh yea they totally made me' and US government people incredibly invested in keeping their pet nazi around going 'yea that checks out, really he's a victim too'

There wasn't much interest because a large part of the American population actually didn't mind the Nazis, especially in the intelligence community and armed forces leadership. To them, Communist Russia was a way bigger threat and quite a few of them were pissed when Japan forced our hand into joining the side of the USSR.

Science works differently in the DC continuity, you're more likely to succeed at an experiment if you're working in a garage with money from illegal activities. Government labs with top of the line equipment are more likely to have terrible accidents that result in an uninvolved third party getting superpowers with a catch.

Its kind of weird to say that destroying an entire planet of peaceful pacifist humans doesn't qualify as particularly moving or meaningful stakes. And that's like a few minutes into the first movie. Also in Star Wars the lead fights his dad in a laser sword duel, and the fact that he intends to kill him if he wins is like a major plot point. pile of brown fucked around with this message at 09:26 on Feb 13, 2022 |
