No, wing walking was literally walking on the wings of an airplane in flight. It was done mostly by stunt pilots

The chase car isn't to support the wings, on landing they just skid on the tips. The chase car is to let the pilot know their exact attitude because to land, the U-2 has to stall at like 2 feet off the ground exactly.

Given how fast that thing was in the air, it must have had a drat good headwind.

With this in mind, the replies to the above video pointed me toward this vid of U2s taking off and landing on carriers during the 60s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8HMPMYL19E

Geez, I've been in a C-130 a fair number of times for work, and I never would've guessed that could happen unassisted.

Imagine a 1950 fighter plane with a glider wing, that's the U2. It's not fast but it has all the lift.

Sometimes they need extra assistance, where you just strap a bunch of rockets to it;

The billowy white smoke was the bearings dying, the heavy pooling smoke was burning epoxy from the motor windings.

I knew it was Fat Albert before I even clicked the link.

How often are JATOs actually used operationally?

Also, the U2 is pretty OSHA when at operating altitude; there’s only about 5-10 knots between going so slow you stall and going so fast you’re unstable due to transonic aerodynamics. This is colloquially known as the ”coffin corner”.

What is this thread?

Ramrod XTreme
Never, anymore.

When they took them out of service they gave the whole stock to the blue angels, who burned through them on fat Albert until they were all gone in like the early 2000s.

I wonder if Antarctic service aircraft still use them?

Here's what that looks like when you're really serious about getting airborne as fast as possible, as opposed to doing a demonstration:

Note that this was to allow the thing to take off full of troops and rescured hostages from a soccer stadium. The rest of the video is also good, but I've timestamped the takeoff because it's *very* short.

We have a few broken doors, every one is a different model from different manufacturers. Nobody can find parts and we can't even Frankenstein them since the parts don't match.

We've gotten to the point of parking a pallet trailer on one and fitting foam board sealed with Great Stuff on another.

We've got a couple of months before the new plant is built so we're opting for safe and secure instead of functional.

I see pants. Underpants are pants.

I think the video would be more convincing if they edited out the command 'ogon' (fire) just before the explosion, but at least there are pants.

Note also that the clip right after the one you timestamped shows the other half of the equation, where it used rockets to slow to a stop almost instantly to land in the soccer stadium in the first place. On one of the tests of that system, the rockets fired early and the plane fell out of the sky from 30 feet or something, destroying it and resulting in the cancellation of the program.

They didn't cancel the program! They were going to go ahead with the rescue mission using one of the other modded aircraft, but then Reagan got elected and the hostages got freed. They were gonna fly that thing into a soccer stadium and load people on it.
