I like that the artist's twitter account is suspended, and I also like that loading that article immediately gives me an ad for crypto

If anything, crypto is a fantastic flop for doing anything but making a few early adopters rich off a mass of rubes. Completely loving up the viability of your community/company/nation/species as a going concern in order to make a small cabal of oligarchs rich is kind of how capitalism works.

My own pet theory is something like this: some spooks sat down and said “hey, you know how we use Tor to hide our actions online? We need something like that for the money we use to buy those drugs and pay for those pedophile rings that are the main things we do.” -> create crypto currency-> say “oh poo poo, this is only used for drugs, guns and kiddie porn, once people know how to track this stuff they know how to find us,we’re in trouble! We need some normal rubes to use this to hide our transactions” -> rubes buy crypto -> say “holy poo poo if we get everyone to buy our crypto we can cash out and live like kings” -> sell apes -> nation Balkanizes after bread riots because farmers took subsidies to stop growing wheat and grow jpegs instead (date TBD)

But that’s just me, and I’m a little nutty.

I don't think it was on their radar until the silk road case but then the fbi had 33m in Bitcoin they'd seized (worth 7.5b today) and I think probably a lot of questions started being asked at that point.

this also makes a lot of sense to me. it wouldn't surprise me if circa 2007/2008 they cook up crypto with this raft of spook/foreign policy objectives: provide cover for their own shady finances, extend US financial power into places that have dedollarised, increase corruption in adversarial regimes etc etc. but over time all of those just kinda fall away and are replaced with GET SOMEONE ELSE HODL BAG, RUGPULL

The CIA are going to hide their activities using a public write-only ledger which they can't control by design. Sure guys. :nallears:

I hate how every article that talks about bitcoin using that phrasing: "compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles".

Know how it actually works? It's a lottery. Whoever guesses the right answer first gets some bitcoin. Having a greater share of the hashing power gives you more guesses than everyone else so you win more often. That's why it's an infinite arms race with ludicrous and ever expanding power consumption and trail of electronic waste.

yes and also the odds of winning get lower the more guessers there are, so adding more computers to the game does absolutely nothing for transaction speed or throughput

This (short) thread is a great layman explanation for how buttcoin mining actually works. It's literally just "tell me a random number and I'll tell you if you won or not."

why? increasingly insane financial fuckery is basically one of the few growth sectors left western capitalists are willing to invest in. returns on that are so much better than any investment in typical capital intensive industries able to absorb the amount of capital they have to stash somewhere, or even most software or intellectual property focused businesses

it's not like having finance being an increasingly large portion of your economy has ever lead to anything bad happening or anything
