Setting aside the entire media ecosystem that thrives on hot takes to either gain approval and outrage to drive engagement, a lot of this poo poo is just reading class as aesthetics because for most people class is now a moral category. You see it in the ways people try to constantly redefine class along racial or education lines ('white working class' does the work for commentators trying to hew class in either of those directions both liberal and conservative) rather than one's relation to production. That definition creates an otherwise huge group of people with a common interest. Driving a F150, talking with a certain affectation, and openly calling for Trudeau's head is somehow authentic working class because it's impossible for working class people to support Trudeau, I guess? Bore down into any of this and you can see it's complete nonsense.

CATO is all rah rah western working class Ontario snobs, despite having 3 degrees and it makes no loving sense to me at all. That's a difficult one to unwind, mainly because it probably means going back as far the Family Compact and looking at how Canada has been ruled by various families over the past two centuries, sometimes cooperating, sometimes in competition with each other. And frankly I don't have a ton of knowledge about every part of Canada and the particular ways class relations has specifically developed. I mean there absolutely was a Laurentian consensus/elite the same way the United States has had a coastal elite. All the post-secondary education institutions were in Ontario and Quebec (and the Maritimes), most of the population is there, as is most of the manufacturing, and Canada's political leaders. The battle over provincial control over natural resources that is best known in Trudeau Senior's National Energy Program absolutely antgaonized the west, but the Maritimes have felt it too with the fisheries collapse in the 90s, the slow regulation of lumber in BC and elsewhere. Or go back to the SoCreds and their attempts to address problems facing Prairie farmers Anywhere the feds get involved you're going to antagonize that relationship between metropole and periphery. I'm just not sure it really applies anymore. Half the conservative politicians who play to western alienation are born in Ontario and at least partially educated there. It's just window dressing to tap sometimes understandable resentment towards the uneasy balance of power we have between the federal government and the provinces. Sorry this analysis is sort of half-formed because it's a tough question! It's worth talking about though, for sure.

Went to elite universities after undergrad, and has spent more time in London, DC and Ottawa than Alberta any time in the past 10 years. That’s what makes it so weird! I shouldn’t talk about her too much online but she orders flannels from some boutique in Calgary. I genuinely don’t understand this “working class” thing. Everybody in her family of our generation owns an acreage, which I understand to be a plot of unproductive farmland. Those can’t be cheap either! A lot of the women don’t seem to work. It doesn’t exactly scream downtrodden by Ontario fatcats, you know? Frosted Flake has issued a correction as of 04:31 on Feb 16, 2022 |

Local elites begrudge metropolitan elites even though they share the same schools, the same culture, the same backgrounds. But they own different modes of production I guess? Not sure. Local elites begrudge the metropole because they're further away from the center of power. Their position is is also more precarious because if the local conditions change and suddenly their region becomes less valuable, then they will lose out on wealth and power even if their position within the local society remains the same. Kind of like what's happening with Alberta for example. No matter how much wealth the natural resources might have provided, they are still at the mercy of the market that decides how much value those resources have. It's safe to say that everyone has the same mode of production now, the capitalist mode of production. The capitalists still compete with each other, because that's the nature of capitalism, along with the tendency to concentrate. But some capitalists will group together to preserve their status when threatened by other capitalists from say a different nation, or province, or whatever. Edit: I could be completely wrong though since I just got this idea from listening to an episode of trueanon https://soundcloud.com/trueanonpod/shoot-me-in-st-louis lol, uh you can skip to like 8 minutes where it starts.
