people are insanely mad to this day about crono being killed offscreen but it was absolutely the right decision. no one wants all the problems in cross immediately solved by goku being next door, that would be boring. killing off goku in his sleep allows other characters and stories to shine.

chrono cross rules and is a very good sequel to trigger. people who just wanted "chrono trigger 2" are going to be disappointed, but gently caress them; trigger is a masterwork because it's exactly the right length for what it is. making more of it with any of the same characters would have instantly gotten boring.

Inspector Gesicht posted:

Chrono Trigger was a perfect game. But since the otherwise stellar DS port it comes tacked a post-game dungeon. It's grindy, repetitive, and is counter to the game-design of the lean original. It also attempts to canonize a story element that fans loving hate.

chrono trigger DS had two new dungeons. one of them is the dimensional vortex and is the one that ties into cross, with the dream devourer and everything. the other is the lost sanctum, where you help out a tribe of reptites in the worst and most repetitive jrpg content ever made.

See, I think they could have just not answered the question of "what happened to chrono" and I would have been fine. But shoehorning a scene halfway through the game where you just see the ghosts of all the old main characters just felt lame since until then I'd kind of figured it was a final fantasy style sequel, entirely different world with no real connections to the previous one.

Man, Origami King has some weird ideas about what constitutes a funny gag from time to time. I just did an extended sequence where you have to choose which way to go based the advice of one character who keeps getting it wrong and one who keeps getting it right. It sure feels like a setup for something funny eventually happening if you keep following the wrong character, but no, you hit a choice that's just an instant game over if you follow them. And a third character shows up, instant game over if you follow them too. It's not even a gag, you just have to follow the "right" character's advice again, and even then you get the same instant game over if you don't react quickly enough.
I'm liking the game, but there's been a number of times where it feels like it comes in sight of a solid joke setup but things just fizzle out.

Something else that's kind of annoying about Far Cry 6 is how when you go to take over an enemy installation you're usually given an objective to do like steal a truck, rescue a hostage or hack a computer. Or you could just kill all the guards and that takes over too. Often the guards are all outside of the facility so you can end up taking them all out before you even get a chance to do whatever objective the game gives you.

Edit: Also the side content feels poorly integrated sometimes. Like in the western area there's a side mission about an artist who makes "sculptures" by kidnapping poor villagers and pouring molten metal on them. You can find the factory where he's been doing this and all the creepy examples of his work but actually doing the side mission where you hunt him down and kill him never goes there. Instead he's just at some random little village with some guards.

I don't know if it's just random luck or meant to happen that way, but the quest... pointer? (The people who give you the heads up on where to go for sidequests) for the steel factory pointed me at the woman who gave me the quest to kill the "artist", so if it was intentional, at least there's some narrative flow there. I think the town the "artist" was raiding for people also had a note saying the people were being taken to the steel plant.

And let's just go down the list of everything I can think of.

The 3rd Birthday, Metroid: Other M, every millimeter of story that we've gotten in the 24 years since Star Fox 64, Chris Redfield after like what do you think RE5? RE 1 even?, Dead Space 3, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled restructuring itself into a Fortnite Microtransaction store months after the reviews for the game were done. Not to mention that 87 page legal document you have to scroll through to actually start the game, Guacamelee 2 for having one dimension that throws like 8 memes at you, Elder Scrolls and Fallout depending on who you ask, Duke Nukem, Banjo & Kazooie, Pokemon and Saints Row too apparently.

Samus has always been kinda like the doomslayer to me. In that she's basically a one person unstoppable army. So the sudden weird submissive character shift to having Men in CHARGE weirded me out to no end.

To be fair, he's not her sole creator like he likes to paint himself as in interviews. He's just kind of taken credit for a lot of work other people do since the more senior staffers have either quit or died. Multiple people are credited for her design and creation but Sakamoto was the one who would weirdly say things like "I'm the only one who knows where Samus' mole is" in interviews, when games had shown her in bikinis for years which just has some really bizarre implications. But every game he's had overwhelming control over has been increasingly weird. Metroid Fusion introduced Adam and not only decided to lock down a lot of the free roaming exploration people loved about the series, but often literally locked the player into rooms so computer daddy could monologue at them for extended periods of time, followed by so many locked doors with no alternative routes that the game was very linear. Other M continued the trend of increased cinematic scope and scale, introduced the Zero Suit so they could show samus' rear end off during gameplay while rendering her almost completely helpless for a while; followed by Other M which just kind of combines all that poo poo into a game that not only just copies and pastes Fusion's story but doubles down hard on its worse aspects and drops the good ones. Including the most notable moments where samus figuratively regresses into a child at the mere sight of an enemy she's killed three times over now (though canonically it's only twice? Other M takes place before fusion.) and has to be saved by a man, and then dadam literally shoots her in the back and goes to clear the final stage for her because she isn't strong enough to do it. Also her suit is magical now and she can't like, suit up when she's emotional, like the woman she is. So it's just a really awkward scene where she's screaming and crying and trying to magical girl summon her power armor after it just kind of vanishes after one shot to the back and it's not working.

Also, only slightly related, but he made a big deal in the lead up to Other M's release about being vague whether or not he, personally, considered the prime games canon and was referenced multiple times as pushing back hard against a lot of the stuff Retro wanted to do in prime 2 and 3 which led to some degrees of development hell for those, which is why prime 3 just has so many cut features. Including the notorious example of Samus Aran only working for the government, because she doesn't hunt bounties, when a large part of the proposed idea for Corruption was that they wanted the other hunters to be bounties you'd be hunting across the solar system.

And one of his big things was promising to Nintendo that he could make Metroid a popular series in Japan. Metroid had always been one of Nintendo's lower-profile series, and much more popular in the West than the East. Sakamoto swore that he could make a Metroid game that would be a huge hit in Japan.

He failed, and one hilarious coda is that Other M was made by Team Ninja, full of action QTE stuff. The Japanese audience by and large hated that, and accused Sakamoto/Team Ninja of trying to make Metroid into God of War or whatever for the Western audience.

It's honestly kind of impressive how badly Other M tanked in both the East and West and both sets of fans thought the game was pandering to the other.

I remember that when I first told my dad about Duke Nukem Forever finally being released (he really liked the original Duke Nukems), he thought what they should've done was put it together in the order levels were actually finished. So you start in the 'direct DN3D sequel' territory, then move on to when it was on id Tech, then early Unreal, all the way through to eventually playing a modern FPS.

To this day I'm still disappointed that's not what we got. And still haven't, which is actually kinda weird; FPSes have had some very tangible eras of history comparable to platformers and RPGs, but you've seen those genres deliberately do sort of 'tour through the ages' games, you haven't seen it from FPSes.
