So assuming they don't step back from that bad decision (again), what would be a good Comixology alternative? At this point I'm content to use Marvel and DC's subscription services to read their stuff but for other US publishers as well as manga, is there any good option out there that has a lot of stuff in one place?

Shonen jump has a decent app that I don't use much because I'm too old to read a comic right from left, so that's a manga source.

Yea, I'm subscribed to it since it's an incredible deal. Though it only contains stuff that Viz publishes. Thinking more along the lines of a digital source that has stuff from as many publishers as possible so I can cut down on the amount of apps I gotta juggle to get my comics fix.

Some publishers have their own stores. The other services that purport to sell everything are limited to the more minor publishers in the business, won't have Marvel, DC, or Image.

Google Play books is what I'm doing for Image books, they also have DRM free downloads as an option generally. On the imagecomics.com website for a comic, there's a buy drop-down link that includes Google and other places you can buy a book.

Aren't the digital codes technically being redeemed for the Marvel app and you can link it with comiXology to mirro the libraries?

I just don't get the logic here. Like sure, you want synergy or whatever and think other people care about it, just change the app name to Prime Comix or whatever. You already have a perfectly ok system, why build a new, worse one?

Yeah, you don't get promoted for keeping a thing that already works well running, you get promoted for launching a new thing that replaces it.

As for where I get my comics -- generally the same places I get my ebooks (humble store, kobo, etc), and then pry the DRM off them if needed so I can actually read them on my tablet.

According to the Comixology site, the app is getting "updated" to whatever the new one is, so I guess we'll see how terrible it is in a few days.

That said, it's not great getting an individual email for each subscribed comic I'm getting this week.

My focus is UNPARALLELED!
So I clicked on the link that shows what the comic store will look like in my country after the changes, and it's awful. No way to discover new series, no recommendations, just a random collection of single issues, trades and manga from random years.

The only benefit from all this is that I can break the DRM so I can read my purchases on various devices like I do with all my ebooks.

What books can have the DRM removed?

Going through the Amazon link took me to a page with a single column that consisted entirely of Demon Slayer Managua which I have no interest in.

Most books sold by Amazon can have their DRM removed, it requires Calibre and a very specific version of the Kindle desktop software, but it's how I get the ebooks I buy from Amazon to work on my Kobo.

Secretly force socialism, communism and imperialism types of government onto the people of the United States of America.

i took part in a beta trial for the new comixology app (the NDA has lifted as of today, since they're rolling out the updated app now, according to an email they just sent out) and i'm morbidly curious as to what it will look like. sincerely hope they took some feedback and made meaningful changes.

a few months ago, it was effectively a stripped down version of the kindle reader for iPad. The storefront UI was janky as all hell, subscription service navigation seemed like a nightmare (I don't do any subscriptions but I did explore it a little bit). if I had to choose between finding comics on amazon's storefront in a web browser or discovering new comics on the beta version of the new app, I would hop on my laptop 100% of the time.

Well the update is out. The reader is… mostly the same? Feels like they changed poo poo around for the sake of changing it but I can still read it as I generally do (landscape / 2 pages). New storefront in the app looks like a mess but so I’ll keep buying poo poo on the actual website.

my iPad got the update pushed and yeah this is basically what it looked like a few months ago. I think the only change is the pinch & zoom to change cover size. The storefront stuff looks the same -- 5-6 carousel rows of stuff, mostly just trying to get me to look at Comixology Unlimited and Prime Reading stuff. Also forgot to mention that the list feature (which is buried in the user settings) is trash, disappointingly.

How's browsing your library in the new app? I don't regularly use comixology, but when they had a poo poo ton of Black Panther and later Scooby Doo comics for free I did grab those.

Honestly, it's the one bit that seems a wash/maybe a mild improvement? You can sort by 'author' (which has problems applied to comics, obv) but also title or most recent purchase, have individual issues or grouped as series. It's fine. Which makes sense, it's the part that would likely have gotten the worst reception if it was an active downgrade and there's no incentive for them to mess it up to try and funnel readers to let the algorithm do all the thinking about what you want to see, unlike with the store.

The store, whoo boy, even in the app it's a mess. The publisher filters for new releases don't work, there's no other filters except for Amazon rating, not creator, not trade/GN vs issue, no way to sort by alphabetical. In short, slap the square peg into the round hole of the Amazon storefront and the algorithm.

Guess what, the website is going too! And will now direct to the Amazon site, and will basically look like it does in the app. (with maybe a few more features, to be fair)

Alright, downloaded the update on my iPad. There's basically nothing in this that's an improvement, and there's definitely some steps back in functionality, but nothing really that's a dealbreaker for me.

The screen I looked at close to 100% of the time was the Smart Lists tab where I'd read and download my new purchases, with a carousel of "Unread" letting me get through stuff. That's gone. You can still filter to functionally the same thing, but why not just have the view I had? (Or let me set up my own smart lists? That would be nice!) I suspect the main Library view is more powerful overall than the old Smart Lists, as it has a lot of options for filtering and sorting, but it also means switching back and forth to do things. Annoying, but not a huge deal. The list view actually seems decent enough, but also comics have nice covers I want to see, so I doubt I'll be using it much.

The Discover tab seems decent enough for searching for things - about on par with the Comixology website (the Amazon site remains to be seen, but I'm not expecting to heap much praise there, either). Still can't buy comics directly in the app, but that's not unexpected, but you can download things in Unlimited if you're a member.

The actual reading experience seems to be the same. It defaulted to single-page view with a vertical scroll when in landscape, which is *interesting* but not at all how I want to read. It took finding the right option, but I was able to get it back to the double-page landscape layout I prefer.

All in all, it's an update that doesn't make much sense other than to, I assume, unify the code base with the Kindle app.

Gaz-L
Jan 28, 2009
That last part is the key I think. It's basically the current Kindle app with a couple of mods to make it just usable enough for comics. Because a bunch of the big features are basically nothings. The whole 'read while downloading ' thing is nonsense when talking about even prose books, let alone a 22 page comic. It's a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

The Sorrow of Poets
I haven't gotten the update on my Android devices yet, but I was part of the beta trial as well and am not terribly optimistic about it.

Two things that stood out to me during the beta:

  • The scan quality/resolution of the downloaded comics was worse than in the old app (even when supposedly "HD"). Blurrier edges and text were most noticeable when zoomed in. Since I like to use Guided View most of the time, this was very apparent to me. Being a user of Guided View also made it apparent that...
  • Guided View was broken on several of my comics. Enabling GV would still zoom in, but not on the usual panel-to-panel basis. Instead, it was on a quadrant basis: upper left, upper right, lower left, lower right - just filling the view with each quadrant, ignoring panel borders. GV did work on some of my comics (making it easy to do comparison screenshots to check on my first point about resolution), but the quadrant-based issue plagued several of the comics I checked.

Those were the two big issues I recall, and I remember not being the only tester to mention them. I guess we'll see if the official release does any better with regards to those particular points.

I didn't notice any difference in quality, even in the little bit of GV I used, so maybe that was fixed or an Android-specific issue.

I didn't realize "read while downloading" was a new thing since I've been able to that for as long as I remember?

EDIT: Comics aren't shared with your Amazon Household lmao

My phone app is telling me to sign in to see my library, but my iPad still functions the same.

That store is a mess and I don’t feel like spending any time browsing.

I tried seeing things I’ve already bought, and aside from telling me when I acquired it, it looks like I could buy it again if I hit the wrong button. The experience is really unpleasant and I think I am going to be saving a lot more money going forward because I am not just going to go to the shop to look at comics, especially when everything is steering me to Comixology Unlimiited.

Oh, cool. Now I have to remember when what few comics I read actually come out and buy them individually, can't just get the app to buy them automatically and tell me when they're out.
Not even a "will not be available at this time", just "not American? Get hosed"

Is there a single good thing about this update?

God drat the amazon store sucks for comics. gently caress. Can no longer browse sales while seeing what I own (and what I don't). Now it's only the cost generally showing 0 because it's either kindle or comixology unlimited (oh wait the cost is in tiny font at the bottom lol). gently caress this sucks rear end.

EDIT: Ok if I go to the series page itself (sex criminals as example) then it does show all items and tells if you own them. BUT: volumes and singles (and omnis) are kept separatedly so you can't just browse ALL that a series has. It's all broken down.

God drat I hate this the more I dig into it.
