i think there's a lot of interesting conversation to be had with this. it's like the intersection of fandom and gender. like, fandom FOR gender. instead of putting princess zelda in house hufflepuff or whatever you put her in "futch" so you can feel a connection if you can put yourself there too. i wonder if that's what's behind internerd communities' obsession with categorizing everything (tropers etc.); putting yourself or your identity in a group with your favorite fictions to widen your perceived social group if your real life doesn't have a lot of people like yourself to form bonds with. i dunno. this isn't a judgmental thing just interesting.
