Wrong thread for it, but since it's been brought up...I was thinking of becoming a prison pen pal to a couple of non-violent offenders, like sex workers or drug dealers or whatever. Does anybody have experience with this (as a pen pal, but I guess as an inmate too)? Does it actually make the prisoners feel a little better, or is it more for the person on the outside ("Look at me, I'm such a good person for writing to CRIMINALS")? A quick glance at Google shows me a few sources saying that it's a good thing to do and gives the inmates some small semblance of something to look forward to, but Always Ask Goons and such.

I'm happy to throw a few bucks in their account once I get to know 'em, but... Anyway, I can't find a pic, but one of the juice places downtown put out a sign that said "Food as medicine" once the pandemic started, and I can't help but think it's some anti-vax poo poo. We're in a pretty "rich white hippie" area, so it wouldn't surprise me.

We had a goon A/T about doing time for drug stuff (minimum security) and the overarching theme was boredom. I suspect they'd be psyched just to have someone not in prison to talk to.

I've worked with a group that would set up Amazon wishlist's for books for sex worker inmates. The universal response was joy. The majority reported it making them feel like they mattered. That they were people. The downside is that the rules for things like what books someone can get are completely and totally arbitrary to what the warden feels like on any given day. Amazon is pretty good at dealing with that but just be aware poo poo will bounce.

I can't speak for the US-specific gambles, but the topic is pretty funny when you compare to Europe, where I counted at least nine of the twenty kits in the Premier League having the chest sponsor be a betting organization (and I might have missed some).

Leading to the side effect of none of the “kids” replica shirts being allowed to have the sponsor on there and a load of thriving businesses down the market where a bloke will iron the betting sponsor onto your kids shirt.

Dongicus posted:i had a look through their website too and jesus america is so hosed up lol Yeah. My "big essay" for one of my college English classes was about the lack of mental stimulation/entertainment for inmates (I focused on max-security prisons, but it's an issue in all prisons), so it's been a Thing That Bugs Me for almost ten years now. In my mind, I don't care if someone did a murder or rape or any other violent crime. If they're already in prison for life, they're not gonna "hurt society" anymore. Let them have a goddamn book or something (and that includes folks in solitary).

SWOP's Behind Bars group is the only one I know of that assists inmates. It's not likely to be the only one, just the one I know. Most of the other groups of I know tend to be aid groups or mutual aid groups for sex workers who aren't incarcerated. Like a lot of professions sex work was hit hard by COVID. Some parts bounced back, like porn production. And strip clubs seem to be back. Most of the escorts I know of are saying business is still down. But all of those groups tend to have piss poor insurance. So COVID can be a nightmare.

There's a brewpub near me that brew a smoked stout and a raspberry lambic, and one of their suggested pours is half of each. Surprisingly good. I feel their stout is TOO caramely and smokey, and the lambic too sweet, so together they have a nice balance.

Famous mentally ill person Kanye West has a new album out next week, which he's been hyping up quite a lot. Probably would be another very successful album except... He is only releasing it through a separate $200 'media device', thus forcing fans to buy it and then his album on it, which is only playable through this device. Of course, he partnered with some tech company to create it, so I guess sales haven't been very good lately. The gimmick is you can manipulate the song's vocals, drums, bass, and i guess guitar or keyboard, through these four light spokes, in real time. Some people don't care to remix brand new music and just want to listen to the drat album that you should have remixed yourself properly already but ok. He's done this before too apparently, when The Life of Pablo came out, he said that it would only be available through Jay Z's Tidal streaming thing, 'in perpetuity'. And two months later, it was out on other streaming sites anyway. So who knows if and how long he will stand by this dumb decision of demanding his fans to splurge a couple hundos for the privilege to even listen to his bullshit, probably whining about Kim and his kids more, and more threats to Skete Davidson, as he calls him now. https://toofab.com/2022/02/17/fans-react-kanye-west-donda-2-only-available-his-own-streaming-platform/ This has been your Hollywood moment

loving lol, complaining that artists get "only" 12% of the money that goes into the industry. That's like the operations vp of mcdonalds saying "most of us lower level workers earn less than 700k/yr even though we handle your food, we deserve a raise". Like no poo poo artists are getting screwed, but that just comes across as an uniformed wasp who complains that their caviar never comes with enough crackers

Ye's done a lot of poo poo worth criticizing in the last couple days. Standing up for artists rights is not one of them. Ye's already loaded and can get the streams on Spotify to stay that way, it's the smaller artists that are so hurt by streaming, the margins are so much lower on it then they were on CD or vinyl. If this forces the streaming platforms to give a larger slice to the actual artists it's a massive win for all musicians.

Probably the opposite; everyone keeps seeing these pro-smalltime-musician streaming services failing almost out the gate, so the music industry laughs at their little attempts to change how the industry works, and continues along as it always has.
