Is there anyone in this thread with their FAA medical who's on an SSRI / taking ADD medication that could roughly outline the hurdles I'm going to encounter trying to get a class 2-3 medical?

I've done some light reading on the medical certification process and unless I'm mistaken everything I'm reading leads me to believe taking Adderall and SSRIs that are not explicitly approved are automatic non starters without expensive waivers and approvals

I've been taking SSRIs and ADD medication since I was a child, the better part of 20 years now.

Which leads me to my next question... How many people are lying to their medical examiners about the medications they're taking?

Currently chasing my PPL with roughly 20 hours of flight time logged.

Have you applied for a medical yet? I know, hindsight, etc, but really, anyone who's considering getting a license and are taking any kind of meds or need strong vision corrections, etc, you really need to complete your medical before throwing any money at lessons.

I'm in Canada, so it's a bit different here (but equally difficult in your situation) and my understanding is that it's going to be difficult/expensive if you are taking non-approved meds.
If you have been stable for years (which it sounds like), it's possible, though, but your first step should be to talk to an understanding AME.

A lot. I was having some "issues" a while back and was talking to someone in the agency about it and he told me that there are a ton of people taking anti-depressants that the FAA knows nothing about. I'm not at all surprised by that.

I don't know if there's an actual approval process if you're taking something that isn't one of the approved SSRI's. And even with those it's a ton of work to keep your medical.

That's all ATC side though.

…unless you want to fly light sport aircraft.

You can fly those without a medical certificate, but you cannot fly them if you have ever been denied a medical certificate.

Appreciate everyone who posted their 2 cents regarding my question. I'll check out the other thread for more aviation talk.

I plan to get my medical here in a month or two. I'd be concerned about throwing money at lessons but thankfully I'm in a rather unique position and I literally only pay for fuel right now when I fly.

So the 20 or so hours I've logged only cost me ~$800. Maybe give a few hundred lol.

I'm on SSRIs for OCD and Anxiety. Back when I was seriously working towards my private (this was probably 2014-16) I was told by both local AMEs and the FAA that SSRI's are only cleared for depression. If my memory serves me right,If you're on a SSRI for a non FAA approved diagnosis and try to get your third class, your case immediately gets kicked up the food chain to (at the time I think it was) the OKC FAA office where you have a hearing and have to take a bunch of medical tests. I think the quote was something like $10K out of pocket and it's currency may not last long enough to get through the FAA if there's a lot of medical hearings going on, or something like that.

I was told all of this, plus the fact that the paperwork is apparently way cleaner and less expensive if you have depression, like right after the Germanwings dude flew himself into the Alps which was a weird kind of surreal.

Everyone recommended the AOPA for help navigating this stuff and they were great, I just couldn't afford all the red tape at 19, so they're my recommendation to you as well if you need more specific resources for your case.

That he was going to be able to make the turn onto the runway without more power. The pilot thought the same thing, but misjudged the turn.

Stable just means their condition is not deteriorating, and is not a measure of the severity of their injuries. They could have all sorts of broken bones and lacerations and stuff, but as long as their vital signs are steady and they don't have something that is getting worse over time, like uncontrolled internal bleeding, they are classified as stable.

The video for Jamiroquai’s “White Knuckle Ride” came up in my youtube feed last nite and apparently the R44 in it is owned by the singer (who is a maniac for high performance cars as well). He pilots it a bit but I think a stunt pilot was used for a few scenes, seems extremely sketchy.

To briefly derail back to the jetway discussion, I know someone who punched a hole in an Alaska Airlines 737 with a ladder, and didn't get fired for it.

They were part of the ground crew working a flight where the ground power cord kept falling out of the socket on the airplane, and someone had the idea of setting a ladder under the airplane to prop the cable up so it would stay put, which worked great.

What they didn't realize was that they'd placed the ladder when the airplane was empty, and when the plane settled down a few inches as passengers, fuel, and bags were added, the top of the ladder punched a hole in the side of the fuselage.

Despite the airplane being down for quite a while for repairs, no one got fired over the incident (nothing said not to put a ladder there), and the patch was visible up until the airplane got scrapped years later.

The guy who put the ladder eventually got fired, but it was almost a decade later, after he'd worked his way up to being a flight attendant at Alaska, and then said he was gonna shoot passengers who had Black Lives Matter clothing.

They have some, as the rotor slows and cones severely when it flares. If I'd hazard a guess, they didn't get the collective lowered quick enough when the engine quit and never recovered the RPM's (and then flared way too high and dropped out of the sky).

I once saw a guy drive off with the ground power cart without unplugging it from the aircraft.

This annoys the charter flight.
