i doubt your nazi buddies are too far behind with the armaments, they seem to be doing quite well shelling civilians with what they currently have though. unless the separatists are shelling themselves, which is very likely - russians don't value their own lives like we do.

the smoking gun is making a preemptive video evac announcement for civilians in advance of an expected rampup of hostilities? putin has hosed up for the last time. i hope someone will stop his devious plan of assassination attempts on pro russian separatists, shelling their cities, and making videos in order to trigger a war that will see russia sanctioned away from the EU.

I've alluded to a couple of times about how Rappler is sort of The Intercept of the Philippines, in that it's a bastion of liberal-leaning news that was funded by Pierre Omidyar, and that it's editor-in-chief, Maria Ressa, is heavily bent towards this whole "social media is a root cause for the rise of authoritarian leaders" type of rhetoric that you'd see crop up in Russiagate-adjacent circles in the West, or specifically in "The Social Dilemma" documentary from Netflix in late 2020 that very clumsily tried to call out social media networks and its algorithms as a main driver for radicalization.

And I wanted to share a bit of what I mean, because she gave a speech today, similar to when she received a Nobel Prize, that hits on these notes:

https://twitter.com/rapplerdotcom/status/1495338459161976832

quote:

You don't really know who you are until you're forced to fight for it. And it's been one big fight for my values and my profession since 2016. And it's made me stronger.... What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

This is my 36th year as a journalist. My life since 2016, the year that Rodrigo Duterte and Donald Trump were elected, has been a roller coaster.

[Maria Ressa] discusses surveillance capitalism: [It's] when our atomized personal experiences are collected by machine learning, organized by artificial intelligence, extracting our private lives for outsized corporate gain. Highly profitable micro-targeting operations are engineered to structurally undermine human will. It is a behavior modification system in which we are Pavlov's dogs experimented on in real time. The consequences are disastrous. This is happening to you, no matter how smart you are. This is happening to the world. This is insidiously shaping our future by encouraging the worst of who we are, the worst of human behavior. If you can make people believe lies are facts, you control them. This is why we have the rise of tyranny all around the world.

We cannot solve the global existential problems if we don't win the battle for facts – that's the foundation of everything. We cannot have integrity of elections if we don't have integrity of facts.

In 79 days, the Philippines will vote in an existential moment for our democracy. The frontrunner for president is Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the son of a dictator ousted by a People Power revolt 36 years ago. He's back, partly because history was changed in front of our eyes. [Networks of disinformation have] convinced Filipinos, some of them, that Marcos the dictator was actually the greatest leader the Philippines has ever had.

What do we do? We have to act with what we have. 79 days before the election, we're not willing to just do nothing 'cause that is not an option.

[Maria Ressa] discusses the #FactsFirstPH initiative and how it aims to champion facts as the May polls near.

This is the first time that 14 news organizations are working together, actually creating content that we can share. The news organizations sharing each other, what a novel idea. And then there's the mesh. This layer combines civil society, NGOs, businesses finally speaking, human rights organizations with the church. That mesh layer is our response to algorithmic amplification. We work together, we collaborate. The research groups will look at the disinformation research. And then we have the layer that's been quiet for too long: the law. Remember if you don't have facts, you can't have rule of law. That layer has already started filing cases. Someone who worked for Facebook told me, "Maria, fact checks don't spread." Yes I know. That's the way social media is designed. Guess what though, Filipinos know this is a moment we could lose everything.

And that's exactly what every member of this group, #FactsFirstPH, is going to do.

Journalists are under attack, discredited, because we push back against the lies. We hold power to account. But in this existential battle for facts, we can't do it alone.

So you have to ask yourself the same question that Rappler and I confronted in 2016: what are you willing to sacrifice for the truth? I know my answer...the idea that I didn't give it my all when it mattered, right now, when so much is at stake. Don't give up, because when you do, you make all of us just a little weaker. You have to act before it's too late. you must join the battle for facts, the battle for truth.

The time to act is now.

you can't implicate Russia if you don't make it look like any opposition to Ukraine is acting at Russia's direction

it's the same thing where any Chinese tech company is spying, because every Chinese company is a Chinese state-owned company*, and therefore will feed all your data back to Beijing

___

* it's also quite funny that, in making these allegations, the West tends to affirm that China actually is a socialist country, if all of its industries are state-owned.

yea it feels like this is extremely Occam's Razor here, either you believe the completely baseless 'what if everything that happens in a conflict zone is actually staged by the treacherous slavs' or the answer is that this series of attacks on separatist territories and holdings is being done by the government that is extremely hostile to acknowledging the separatists.
