You know how every week people who watch Discovery on their second screen make complaints along the lines of "Why did [thing explicitly explained on screen] happen, it makes no sense"?

Imagine that happening on a board with 40,000 posters instead of 40

Every so often I'm reminded that there's a weird insane Twitter account that'd dedicated to endless all caps raging about Star Trek: Discovery and occasional bouts of harassing actors, writers, directors, producers or other crew members involved with the show. The person behind it is straight up Internet Insane.

Discovery has deep, gaping flaws, but the constant “we don’t even know the redhead robot-eyed chick’s name!!” was massively annoying. And that was going on well into season three.

Out of curiosity I had a look at the Discovery Reddit and they have a “no criticism” rule. You’re only allowed to post criticisms in a specific “criticisms thread”.

It makes sense, otherwise you would have threads all over the place where people miss basic plot points because they are too busy hate watching instead of just having them all in one

This season really feels like 2-3 episodes of story stretched out across an entire season

Absolutely nothing has been accomplished. This entire 4 episode or so subplot of Book going AWOL with a weapon ended with a wet fart.

I do think that the episodes as a whole have been better, but the entire thing is just not engaging at all.

I honestly don't know which i prefer, the Season 1 script method of "we need to go from A to C and we can skip B" or the current method of "We need to get from A to C and make it slow, use some numbers in-between or something"

Once again the show did the fakeout of making us think that some of the bridge crew members were going to get something to do, and then NOPE

Better made shows don't have this problem. It's easy to follow what's happening when characters make clever choices that work within the established rules of the setting. Discovery doesn't do that. Instead it tosses the audience contrived bits of dialogue to explain why a character is about to do something that doesn't make sense given the stakes involved, their motivation, what we know they're capable of, or the available technology.

In the last episode, Tarka said they couldn't beam the weapon into the DMA because they would have to drop their shields, allowing Discovery to beam them aboard, presumably before they could initiate their own transporter. Alright, fair enough. But then, after Book agrees to surrender, Tarka flicks his wrist and in a split second the shields drop and the weapon is beamed into the DMA, faster than anyone on the Discovery can react. Asking "why didn't he do that in the first place?" doesn't mean you weren't paying attention. It means the show is lazy and bad.

People have called Snowpiercer a "space ship show" because it's a bunch of people on a vehicle with some weird tech and outlandish problem/solution scenarios. In its third season, it's running full A, B, and C plots from start to end in each episode at a pace faster than any other show I'm currently watching, practically stuffing 3 episodes of plot into 1. I would recommend it! (Note that if you do jump in, the first 3 episodes are the slowest in the series)

There was a moment in this episode where Dadmiral said something to Burnham about how 'she's never let him down'. Which is absolutely wrong if you have seen Season 3 when she disobeyed direct orders and ended up getting demoted (although this of course basically didn't end up mattering at all).

As far as I know there's still only 2 people who can operate the fuckin thing.

Of course that makes the poo poo from a few episodes ago where Cronenberg said he'd have removed Stamets from the ship if he didn't get along with Zora even dumber

As to the refit thing, the typical limitations of a refit would usually be the limitations of thr spaceframe itself which would no longer be an issue when you have a construction method that lets you rebuild the entire frame without compromising structural integrity

That is so true. The recent Star Wars and Star Trek outings have forgotten the craft involved in directing the action we see on screen.

There was so much cinematography talent that went into scenes like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPZigWFyK2o

Now, most science fiction action on screen feels like CGI thrown into a blender.

I'm still always a little caught off guard when he keeps being the dadmiral when for so many eps that first season I was waiting for him to basically be a less-mild version of President, who herself could stand to be a little more oppositional. Half the time Burnham scoffs at whatever the admiral or president are having her do before they finish their sentence and it's basically what Burnham wanted all along anyway or would be totally cool with.

Mariner gets away with a lot but even she faces consequences and setbacks along the way or after. Burnham's whole career since she mutiny'd has been like a discovery-camera-carousel of burnham spinning between brazenly disobeying orders, dramatically agreeing to tearfully follow orders only after making it clear she's doing it because she wants not because you told her to, and getting punished with a promotion or circumstance that allows her to do whatever she wants all along.

The cartoon character kind of seems more self-aware than Michael too. Discovery is a weird show, and I think Michael should've been promoted to captain in a series finale, with the show working its way to proving she deserved it. Saru is a more interesting captain.

The comedy cartoon show obviously gets a bit more rope to play to play with the character's behaviour, and even then everyone around Mariner sees her as a slightly embarassing and self-sabotaging underachiever.

Perhaps he didn’t do that earlier because Discovery was explicitly watching for that to happen and would have stopped him, and then did it at the end out of desperation since his other option was complete failure? These aren’t particularly hard things to work out.

I remember watching that a while back, and thinking "What the gently caress am I looking at?" The CG may be two decades more advanced than in 'Sacrifice of Angels' or B5's 'Severed Dreams', but the choreography - the actual storytelling - of the battle is so dull and uninvolving in comparison that it has to resort to endless spinning of pretty much everything to try to keep your interest. The big ships just sit there firing weedy pew-pew bolts at each other while an infinite number of drones whirl around them until A Story Point arbitrarily happens every so often. Just staggeringly unimaginative despite all the money behind it.
