Tldr; anyone can send anyone anything and then even interacting with it in your wallet to see what it is can run arbitrary code that does almost anything

It's like phishing but wild west as far as very easy to make it look legit and most people aren't very informed

Not always so
I don’t really know how open sea does it, but for most exchanges your wallet is online and hosted by the exchange. You can have your own offline wallet but it’s probably too technical for most people.

to cash out all you have to do is mint a worthless ape NFT then pay some idiot on twitter with a bunch of followers to say its awesome and catch a whale. its kind of like being a mobile game developer

Sure. Sell the apes for crypto, convert the crypto to a stablecoin, then convert the stablecoin to cash. The trick is how to do that without immediately showing up on the radar of the IRS and FBI.

Yeah you give your wallet key & password out to a million different unrelated websites so they can act on your behalf. It's like how your bank has to have your bank username and password, because they need that for you to be able to do banking on their website, they're your bank! But there is no bank, with crypto. So if you want to do banking somewhere, you gotta give that site the credentials necessary for banking. But also because the ethereum blockchain is just a virtual machine that can move assets around in arbitrary ways based on code placed in the blockchain, it's possible for scams to link you to your own banking website where you'll receive an OK button that, if you click it, transfers all your apes to the attacker. This is considered a legitimate use of the banking website.

There's often enough information displayed to realize clicking the OK button is a bad idea, but not always, and anyway there's no way of undoing it, so all you have to do is make someone think they're in a race to hit the OK button and you can trick a lot of people who then have no recourse. Since most "investments" are also scams, they're just different kinds of scams, even "legitimate" exchanges may be trying to rush you in the same way a more straightforward scammer does. So you might engage in 5 transactions and the last one, which plays out exactly the same way, steals all your currency and the product from the last 4 transactions.

The entire system is built in opposition to literally everything that's ever been done to try and make online banking vaguely safe.

They all have punishing interview processes to make themselves feel important, and I don't think I could keep a straight face that long. Plus, most of them are in-person or hybrid, which is a great vote of confidence when you say you have a product that will transform how people communicate.
