Yeah, that's more my point. And there are a lot more people in those replies who argue that in a post capitalism utopia we won't need mental health resources at all. Which is, uh, not right.

This is just a really bad halfassed take on the fact that in a post-Capitalist society *some* mental health conditions wouldn't be as debilitating. If you were able to survive doing things you loved and contributing when, where, and how you could, something like ADHD becomes far less of a barrier. It's part of a larger conversation that started to help destigmatize ADHD and similar conditions that respond well to treatment but can be debilitating without it as not inherently 'bad', just bad for capitalism's needs, as part of a broader push to destigmatize mental illness in general.

As usual, that got sort of half read and pushed out to include literal paranoid schizophrenia and even stuff like major depression where - no, it actually super negatively impacts you in a way that ADHD wouldn't in a society less focused on clocks and specific work hours and times of focus and such. Obviously ADHD also has other problems it causes and the like, but it would be less necessary in a post Capitalist society.

note: I'm not necessarily agreeing with the no-ADHD-under-Socialism people, it's always been more of a 'you aren't bad because your brain doesn't work for Capital' discussion than an actual push to end medication.

It's true but I also like being able to focus on things in my free time so I'd still take meds. I can definitely see the arguments, especially because a lot of medication regimens are trial and error and sometimes you end up in the unfortunate position of the best thing that works for you still having some really nasty side effects. There's no magic pill. So, without the pressure of having to work for a living, or options to do forms of work that you can handle with your own mental illness, there's definitely people who'd pick that and it's not an inherently dumb choice. But that's a really in-depth conversation about brain chemistry, quality of life, and the Capitalistic meatgrinder of having to be productive to have worth, not something you can address with 'anyway psychiatric medication is Capitalism'.

That is so not how ADHD works. I have to take ADHD meds because unmedicated I usually can't do things even if I love doing them.

I agree with you both, I also have ADHD, but the conversation is nuanced and multilayered and depends on the unique specific balance of a person's brain chemistry. It's just like PetraCore said, it's a bigger more in depth conversation than no Capitalism means no meds.

Can I just say (and this isn't at all directed against you Captain Monkey) that one of the most obnoxious things in the world is someone explaining how their own personal political upotian vision will totally help me with my mental health issues? Especially if it's under the guise of "destigmatizing" mental illness. Sorry, I just meant to say that for some people, the quality of life without medication can still be higher than the quality of life with the medication that works best for them, but that's something that still needs a strong support system. I didn't mean to imply that all ADHD or mental illness in general was like that.

Communism historically has a pretty lousy record on mental health treatments.

The word "cheer" on the pack just feels so empty and cynical, like the OK cola cans.

But cheese.

Type "nappy hair" into Google. It's being reclaimed but still not something a crossword puzzle should use.

Yeah, it's one of those words that didn't come straight out of the gates as a slur. Like people whose hair is really kinky or gets frizzy without care would use the word "nappy" to self-describe things happening to their hair. It just happens to be predominantly Black people with that type of hair in America, so it didn't take long for racists to start slinging around "nappy headed" as a half-assed dogwhistle for "Black."

I'd still say it's not 100% taboo, but if you're not actually discussing haircare then it's probably a race thing.

I mean, Nappy Roots was a pretty big act not too many years ago.

I was unaware that it had ascended from “common term used by the AA community with no baggage” to “slur” just on the basis of that Don Imus thing but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Is it really a word to be avoided though, or are we overreacting?

Is it just that that screenshot is suggesting that maybe it’s a word that has racial connotations and therefore isn’t great as an innocuous clue in a crossword puzzle, not necessarily racist connotations?

A good rule of thumb is "If someone from a minority group says that a thing you just said/did is racist, your reaction should be something like 'oh, I'm sorry, I'm terribly out of touch with everything outside my privileged life and honestly didn't know that was a thing I should avoid saying/doing, I won't do it again'" and *move on* because it isn't their job to educate you and all you accomplish by quizzing them about it is making them perform educational labor you should do on your own.

Is it a word that needs to be specifically selected for use in NYT word puzzles? This guy's complaining that it's not in their database of solution words, not that he was labeled a racist for saying it in an innocent context or that the "gaspatcho" beat down his door you arrest him for typing it out once.

I can confirm that NYT-owned Wordle did not allow either "chink" (as in, in one's armour) or "lynch" as of last week when I tried to guess them

At first I was like "that's bullshit they're valid words", then I thought "I mean probably don't use them as solutions, but they're valid guesses", which then led to "in which case it was pretty cool of you to let me know they're not in the database before counting my guess, so uh thanks woke gezpacho I guess"
