That's fair. I am only about 50 chapters in, out of 150, so there's a bit for me to get through yet.

As for no overarching plot (aside from starting up a settlement in the wilderness), that's not too unusual for slice-of-life.

Edit:

Hmmm. That's unfortunate, though not exactly uncommon for serials. I hope it doesn't go on for too long.

You notice it less when you're binging the series but when you catch up to live and an entire chapter is "they have lunch and decide they gotta fix the bathroom" and then the next chapter they haven't gotten to the bathroom yet, you'll notice it.

I don't know what chapter number it was but I checked out a little after they got back from the other town . The arc that's under the spoiler was interesting but then it felt like things came to a screeching halt after that - or maybe that's where I caught up to live updates, I forget.

It's slower than Delve but there's no overarching plot that it's neglecting in favor of spending five chapters on building a bathroom. You will never start reading a chapter of Demense in the hopes that this is the one which finally moves the plot forward only to be disappointed when it doesn't unless you are very confused about which story you're reading.

Ah, I see I glazed over the original recommendation. Frankly, (cw: csa) The name blatantly marketing the text to paedophiles is just such a screaming red flag. Minimizing how hosed up that is is... side eye. I am side eying the recommender.

To be explicit, anyone recommending Demesne has poor taste and a blind spot for how dangerous it is for a text (especially a web serial on a site with a large active reader base of children) to market itself to creeps (even accidentally), in the same way that random people IRL recommending me goblin slayer have poor taste and a blind spot for fascist rhetoric.

jesus christ

the name is literally the only thing in the text that's even vaguely objectionable. if there was a spectrum of "wholesome to pretty hosed up" in web serials recommended in this thread, demesne would be all the way to the wholesome side (worth the candle would be the other pole obv). you do not need to "side eye" anybody because they are recommending the story, not the main character's name.

it's hosed up and bad and makes no sense considering the actual content of the story, to the point that i'm left wondering if the author genuinely just got the name out of a d&d character name generator and has no idea what they're implying with it.

That's a reasonable response, and why I mentioned it in the first place with a disclaimer that there's none of that content in the story. It is a worrying factor that an author would put a reference like that into a story that's otherwise completely wholesome, and I didn't want to hide that.

Hey, they didn't call anyone a pedophile, they just said "wow, that's some pedo poo poo, to the extent that you in thread sure are [i] suspicious [i/]," but did not actually state what they were suspicious of, and that's all it takes to skirt around the rules against calling other posters pedophiles, which ofc were established because it became bizarrely common

I've got no idea what the author was thinking with the name, if it was supposed to lead to some revelation about horrible parents or whatever, but I'm pretty much 100% sure it wasn't intended to market itself to creeps, as it's really not that sort of story.

And yeah, the story itself is pretty much entirely unobjectionable, at least the chunk I read. I ended up dropping it because it didn't really hook me, but not because of anything creepy.

PracGuide Epilogue (or the first part of it anyways) was really good. I kind of felt bad for Hanno when Cat is asking to un-paralyze Hakram. Poor guy has lost a bunch of the heroes he seemed closest to, including the one he loved (even if not exactly romantically), and Catherine is begging him to heal the one member of her party that didn't come out relatively unscathed. There are other good reasons to help Hakram, so it's not exactly a bad choice, though they weren't mentioned (namely the fact that he's the Warlord and fills a very important and hard to replace role as the orc leader). Vivian just losing a hand in exchange for healing Hakram's memory was also a pretty minor cost (especially since magical prosthetics aren't hard to get in this setting). It just kind of stands out given the huge number of other prominent Named who died.

That being said, I don't think there was much of an alternative. It would be difficult/awkward to allow any member of Cat's group to die. Vivienne and Hakram both have vital roles in the post-war order, Indrani just became Ranger (so it'd be awkward to suddenly end her story immediately after that), and Masego had to complete his arc of becoming a god. It's just that Cat comes out looking *really* lucky compared with most other people in the war - most of the people close to her survived.

For those heros, their time had ended, as per the conversation about Christophe and where Hakram is Christophe's Villain mirror, in that they gradually grow from self-abnegation into people. But unlike Christophe, Hakram has a role building the future for an oppressed people.

Don't forget that Hanno has adopted a Role of protecting the potential of the a better future so that Cat's way isn't necessary, so that desperate deeds aren't needed for mere survival. That's how they can work together while still keeping the Wager. If Hakram was in his old role, he probably would have lost out to someone who wanted to go home and run a tavern.
