What's most likely, but least violent resolution to this situation? The regions under Russian territory becoming fully independent after some bloodshed? I don't want to risk my sanity combing Twitter for pundit hot takes.

Least violent resolution is always "Russian threats of escalation are a bluff and they don't do anything beyond they've already done." Currently, they've moved additional troops into the regions they already occupy and been consistently bombarding Ukrainian lines and civilian areas. It's unlikely they'll stop: the point of the bombardment is to provoke retaliation that can justify further invasion.

Least violent, but still likely, is Russia attacks Ukrainian troops in the Donbass but doesn't advance further. This is still going to be very bloody, with military casualties in the thousands and civilian casualties dependent on what Mariupol looks like. Unfortunately even this least violent outcome leaves a lot of cards on the table for Russia and the most likely outcome involves a general invasion to occupy large portions of Eastern Ukraine and probably to try to topple the government completely.

This is a red flag in the context of Hungarys history and politics. hungary is irridentist and nationalist, both the body politic and the population. Orban is the closest ally in europe Putin's got. Hungary has always been looking to regain territory lost in the last century, namely the parts of Carpathian ruthenia that now lie in Ukraine. Is Orban prepared to exit the EU if his mind wanders along the same paths as Putin?

I really hope the west decides to skip the rest of the bullshit and just start putting troops in Ukraine. Russia doesn’t have the troops or resources to fight a protracted multi front war and Putin won’t use nukes as long as Russia itself isn’t invaded.

The whole situation is dumb.

You do realize how Russians are probably going to retaliate against the west even if the sanctions leave the gas and oil industries untouched?

Medvedev literally threatened it outright
Being entirely cut off from Russian oil and gas would really, really suck for Germany and Europe in the short term. However, that has not yet happened. Instead, a gas pipeline that has never delivered gas will now continue to not deliver gas and will maybe never deliver gas.
Despite this gas pipeline having never delivered gas, Germany and the Europe have managed to produce enough electricity and heat to cover its needs in the past. That will not change until something changes with regards to the actual delivery of gas and oil by Russia.
That can and will likely happen in the near future, but we are not there yet. That is a distinction I find important to point out.

Germany is definitely the weakest link in the western alliance at the moment and they have a big red pressure point that russia can push and inflict a lotof pain.

Olaf Scholz was just asked in an interview if Nord Stream 2 would be canceled for good, and it sounds like it's really not. His administration only rescinded a report on the security implications of the pipeline, without which it cannot be approved, but it is just delayed indefinitely until a new report is finished. I imagine they will use it as an incentive for Russia to agree on whatever compromise they'll settle on in the end.

The whole project is such a poo poo show in Germany. If the pipeline is canceled for good, Germany would contractually be on the hook for almost a billion euros in damages to the companies involved. The state where the pipeline ends is a current SPD stronghold and the pipeline has high support locally. The worst part is, that support is not even based on expected new jobs in the state, there will be barely any. Electricity prices in the state are already among the highest in the Bund, despite the comparatively weak regional economy, there is significant push back on the many solar/wind parks in the region and there is a strong nostalgia about the reliability/cheapness of Russian gas.

Any assessment that Russia would be reluctant to advance on Ukrainian urban centers is predicated on UKRmil imposing unacceptable cost on top of the civilian casualties optics.

This calculus is flushed down the toilet if all their troops and equipment is deleted by Iskanders while sitting at base with big shoot me signs.

Russia isn't some weak third world country, they actually have some bite. Governments aren't going to want to risk getting tangled in the situation if potential cost is so deadly. I'd be very surprised if anything more than sanctions against Russia result in this.

I get that it super sucks to not give Ukraine the actual muscle it needs to stop this, but the US going in would almost certainly lead to WW3.Which means the effort would be pointless since there would be no more Ukraine, and probably any other nation left to defend. If Russia attacks a NATO country that would be them kicking off WW3 and we'd have no choice, but that is extremely unlikely given they don't even have enough manpower to capture all of Ukraine.

They would almost certainly take advantage of ISDS provisions to move the liability over to Russia - Ukraine is already going heavily into this approach. Nah it's a valid point and something we'll be watching, it's already a forum rule:

quote:

---Good discussion requires good information, something that is increasingly hard to come by in the age of 140 character non sequiturs and blogging grifters presenting as experts. Make an effort to vet your sources before you post them, and when you do make sure that you make clear the following: who is the source, what do they have to say, and why should they be considered valid. If you're posting commentary on an article, make the effort to also post the article in question, not just a screenshot of the bit being commented on. It should go without saying, but you should also read articles before you post them; you may be punished if an article doesn't say what you claim it says.

It would be helpful to mention something about the sourcing and content of a video when posting it. For example "this is from an independent journalist living in Kharkiv, shows Russian tanks mobilizing" or similar would be great, or even just "twitter rando in Ukraine so take with a grain of salt" etc.

If users are posting misleading stuff we'll deal with that under the normal rules.

Because people in this very thread have argued there is no invasion (or quibbled that Russia occupying DPR and LPR doesn't reallllly count as an invasion) so it's critical evidence and primary source material that shows that yes, tanks are rolling.
