It's just loving batty to me to believe that the American military which hasn't won a significant conflict in almost 80 years is viewed as some super competent power house. Every single one of us has watched them spend 20 years losing multiple wars against enemies with nothing but home made explosives and small arms but a real military is gonna be done sort of cake walk. Like it's actually a good thing that Russia can shoot down drones, actually!

The problem with the American military is that they are built to fight real militaries and have no idea how to deal with anything else. I think going head to head with the organized Russian military would be in their wheelhouse.

Russia also got bogged down in Afghanistan. Fighting those kind of wars is loving hard.

Bruh, US civil infrastructure is hosed, but our military logistics are second to none. If I were Tom Clancy-ing I'd be talking about some weapon system or another making all the difference. The Russian military has serious supply, training, and organizational issues and the infrastructure of the state is not good.

Maybe if it was 2004 or so, but one of the big issues of the US was so focused on anti-insurgency that it let a lot of its traditional capabilities (EW, artillery, armor and ground based AA) slide while the Russians have focused on restoring and improving those capabilities.

we're 20+ years into the GWOT, the American military is built to patrol around the base and call in air strikes based on what the CIA's Havana Syndrome whispers told them that morning. stand up fights against real militaries isn't part of the program anymore, hasn't been for years.

the fact that America still loving sucks at occupations and counter insurgency doesn't mean they haven't rebuilt and reorganised the entire military to do it, it just means they're still bad at it.

lol neither of those are examples of war against a peer, or even near peer. Iraq crippled by the Iran-Iraq War and then Iraq crippled by the Gulf War and Sanctions is not remotely close to a peer.

NATO’s own reports from exercises and wargames shows that conventional war skills are completely and totally eroded. American troops don’t even dig slit trenches when they halt anymore. Counterinsurgency has totally hollowed out their ability to fight and the presumption of superiority, if not invincibility, which you just demonstrated will have hilarious, if tragic, consequences.

I'm not so much talking about the Russian Army not being able to beat Ukraine in a fight, but their logistics are completely hosed. Things in Russia are better than they were 20 years ago but anywhere outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg has just not gotten investment. Idk how long they could actually keep up the fight before things started breaking down.

I keep hearing Russias sUpPlY cHaInS & logistics brought up and can someone please explain to me what the gently caress they are talking about? The north, east, and southern borders are all friendly territory for Russia, where they can & have been able to stage whatever supplies they want. At no point would any supply line be longer than ~450 miles, and usually they would be under 200 miles. In the initial stages of any actual invasion, many objectives would be within range of weapons in Russia or Belarus. Kyiv is only ~80 miles from the Belarussian border!

I can think of a lot of reasons why an invasion would be an absolute horror show but long supply chains & unforgiving logistics aren't among them.
