Watching some footage of the air to air combat yesterday and it's absolutely insane how low the Ukrainians are flying. I'm guessing this is to avoid radar and confuse hear-seeking missiles?

Also unless I'm overlooking some smaller regional wars (Armenia & Azerbaijan?), this is probably the first major air to air combat since, what, the Yam Kippur War?

I've heard 2 stories on this - one is that Russia has S-400s nearby (or is assumed to), so it's to avoid those. The other is that, in the case of the MiG 29 we've seen video of, its radar system doesn't allow for look down/shoot down and thus it has to be at eye level or below anything it wishes to engage. Since helicopters are a huge part of Russia's air force, that means by default that pilot would have to fly low to engage.

There were reports of a Ukrainian plane (SU-27 I think?) being escorted by Polish F-16s to a Polish airbase. I haven't seen any follow-up, this was shortly after the first reports of a Ukrainian MiG-29 shooting down Russian air assets. Unfortunately with the speed this thing is moving, I can't find even the original report - it's been lost amongst everything else going on.

Edit:

Milo and POTUS posted:

Someone else will almost certainly have a better explanation, but the short version is that look down/shoot down are two related capabilities that have to do with an airborne radar differentiating between an object to be tracked and other clutter around it - trees, buildings, vehicles, the earth itself, etc. "Look down" means your radar can track it, "Shoot down" means your radar allows you to engage it if you have the correct armament.

It helps to understand how radar fundamentally works - radar doesn't "see" in the sense that it interprets what an object is directly using optical techniques, it does so using reflections emitted by a given object after the radar has become aware of it (and targeted it, if applicable) with whatever type of radar it has. However, when everything below you is reflecting back up at you, it's a challenge for the radar to figure out what is and is not a valid target. Conversely, when you're pointing a radar skyward, it functionally never reflects back at you - it transmits into infinity, so you are (or should) only be seeing real objects within the given parameters of the radar.

Again, someone else will probably come through and clarify this much more effectively, hope that helped a bit.

A lot of fighter based radar has a narrow beam. Look down shoot down lets it angle the beam down so you can see things better below you which would otherwise not show up.

I'm kind of wondering how Ukraine is getting any aircraft up in the air, I guess certain Soviet era aircraft can operate from unimproved airfields but there is definitely a limit to your capabilities if all you can send up is stuff that can launch/land on a grass strip.

Also yeah especially with all of the noise going around I have my doubts about a single dude merking over a half dozen aircraft and continuing to rack up kills when Russia has the level of air superiority it does. Good propaganda, but I'm definitely skeptical on kill counts or even the defender being the same pilot. It's a good plucky underdog story, but I'm doubtful about how true it is.

Ukraine is definitely pushing out a ton of positive news bits, video clips, and so on that collectively portray them as the plucky underdog kicking Russia’s teeth in. That audio clip of the Ukrainians on Snake Island for instance, just drat.

I was wrong in my earlier post - it was a Romanian airbase and escort that got a Ukrainian Su-27 down safely. Link here.

The earlier article just mentioned the escort and landing, the complete story as of 12 hours ago is that it was flagged approaching Romanian airspace, escorted down and the pilot surrendered. They're currently trying to figure out WTF to do about the situation.

Probably buried to the turret ring next to a likely wading point if it's not already been bombed: The Russians have air superiority, a numbers advantage and negative regard for collateral damage. ATGMs seem good tank medicine at the moment.

What is the likelihood of nearby countries offering air base support to Ukranian air craft? Seems hands-off enough for other countries to be doing. If you're already shipping weapons and supplies over your ground letting planes in your air space and on your air strips doesn't seem like an escalation.

This could probably lead to a quick escalation as Russia attacks Ukrainian assets stationed in Poland or Romania or wherever.

My reptilian brain bloodlust wants NATO to disable Belarusian airfields hosting Russian aircraft and be all like "Hey we said we weren't going into Ukraine. We said nothing about Belarus." But I'm just here for the violence.

Not sure about anyone else, but I have to keep reminding myself that Russia has cans of sunshine, and while it's hard to imagine armageddon over the US/NATO helping out the Ukrainians, a week ago I would have said actually invading (instead of just sabre rattling) was unimaginable because it's got almost no real upside.

Likely because my entire adult life, any opposing force I've had to think about has been nowhere near peer.

Ukrainian Soldier Blew Up Bridge and Himself to Stop Advance of Russian Troops, Kyiv Says

quote:

A Ukrainian servicemember blew himself up to stop Russian tanks from advancing over a bridge out of Crimea, Ukraine’s military says. Vitaly Skakun was part of a marine infantry battalion fighting to fend off a column of Russian tanks at the Henichesk bridge in the Kherson region. The Ukrainian troops had made the decision to blow up the bridge, and Skakun took the initiative to carry out the mission, Ukraine’s General Staff said. “The bridge was mined, but he didn’t manage to get away from there. According to his brothers in arms, Vitaly got in touch [with them] and said he was going to blow up the bridge. Immediately after an explosion rang out,” the military said. Skakun died at the scene but the military hailed him for “significantly slowing down the advancement of the enemy,” which allowed his fellow troops to regroup and deploy defenses. Military commanders said they are working to award Skakun with posthumous honors for his “heroic act.” “Russian occupiers, know that the ground will burn under your feet!” the General Staff said.
