Like menus are lovely? yeah that sucks I guess but I don't need to browse the store on my steam deck, I just need it to play games and in that category it seems great.

I wish they would have splurged for a better screen. Not gonna lie, I think Switch OLED looks better.

Who'da thunk this thing that has been consistently marketed as a computer in a handheld form factor turned out to be a computer?

I'm reading most of these reviews as quite positive if you're the sort of person that doesn't mind dicking with your autoexec.bat to get something running, which is absolutely a huge caveat for some people but for me it's basically fine. Mainly a question of how much you trust Valve to continue rolling updates and if there are specific games you wanna play.

Sounds like it's coming in very hot but also that Valve knows this. Question is how much will be fixed by the time the actual pre-order pops which could be another month or two anyway so feelin' pretty posi I think.

Yeah that's kind of my thought (and hope!). It looks like there's some kinks that need to be ironed out that can be resolved via patches.

Well, for one thing, you can't actually install Windows right now, which is fine for most people, but you can do that on a computer. Steam OS is also pretty clunky looking in these videos, and it seems it gets updated almost daily. Steam on PC really isn't clunky like this is. I'm still debating whether or not to order it when the email comes.

Also note that all reviews have been done the past week before the day 1 patch was released, but even then:
everyone is saying it's an amazingly powerful handheld with great controls, amazing support, and mediocre battery life. The screen is decent and does its job, and there hasn't been a bespoke gaming device that was so truly open (i.e. users can change around basically everything with regards to controls, performance, battery usage, etc).

However, you will need to do some tweaking and some restarts now and then to get some stuff running properly, and not everything works smoothly out of the box. The OS has some great points but it's definitely not perfect.

So yeah, it sounds like a gaming PC in a console form factor to me, which is great for a certain group of people. Once/if valve makes the experience smoother it will actually be great for people who want a true frictionless console-like experience. But even now, lots of general outlets are literally calling it best in class, far beyond any competitor in this space (handheld pc gaming) and a possible paradigm shifter if the kinks are ironed out.

e: what i meant to say is please everyone cancel your preorder it's the only way to go really

this sounds good https://www.pcgamer.com/steam-deck-emulation-installation/

quote:

Holding down the power button on the Steam Deck brings up a small menu that includes a "Switch to desktop" option. This leaves behind the SteamOS interface and plops you down on a classic desktop running on top of Arch Linux. I started looking up terminal commands to install programs in Arch before finding out I was completely wasting my time. This desktop comes with a pre-installed app store just like macOS and Windows (except everything here is free). It's called Discover, and it's conveniently pinned to the taskbar.

And all the emulators I wanted are in there, installable with a click:

Dolphin, for GameCube/Wii
DuckStation, for PlayStation 1
PCSX2, for PlayStation 2
PPSSPP, for PlayStation Portable
Yuzu, for Nintendo Switch
bsnes, for the Super Nintendo

valve's definitely going to get raked over the coals for saying something people interpreted as "all games ever will work out of the box" and then being very slow to actually verify games by launch

while the former was a little bit of an overhype-reading from people, the latter is definitely a hubristic misstep, they clearly underestimated how long it would take to go through nearly ALL OF PC GAMING HISTORY 2001-2021

(i'm being a little jokey but only verifying 1200 titles is not good enough when their catalog has nearly 65,000 games on it, and even if half of those are asset flip/hentai games, that's still less than 4% of their catalog verified for the other half)

they shouldn’t be raked over the coals for people being loving morons and not doing the bare minimum research on their $500 purchase

they definitely shouldn't be, but they will

the reality is probably half the storefront's catalog does work out of the box already, but at around 1000 games run through the verification process per month (at least going by this past month that we've seen via steamDB or whatever you use), the community will end up verifying/non-verifying faster than valve

Games don't have to be verified to play them.

valve will release the new steamOS as an image later (no date known yet). The old steamOS can be found here https://store.steampowered.com/steamos/buildyourown but it's not recommended to use, it's ancient by now, the last update was 6 years ago.

Windows 10 is definitely your best bet at the moment for your usecase.

My editor took out the part where I was asking why games like Genital Jousting and Treasure of Nadia got into the first wave of officially Verified titles, which is apparently because some of the first-wave sign-ups for a Deck were really into porn and/or weird games.

Avast ye lubbers, lest ye be scuppered!
I watched three of those reviews, sounds like a PC to me with all that entails. I have a beefy rig connected to a TC and half the time I turn it on no sound comes out until I spend 5 minutes tinkering. It’s just what it is in the PC world, nothing here sounds any worse. It’s impossible to have a console-like experience with a PC. Unless, and I really hope they do this, they start releasing game-specific profiles where you can choose if you want graphics or battery or whatever and then it just works. Since the hardware is standardized, this would be possible.

I mean, it sounds terrible and everyone should cancel their preorders immediately.

I placed my pre-order 8 minutes after they went live and no email. Sigh.

Took me many years to realize that I actually enjoy hacking recalcitrant systems more than actually doing anything with them. In fact as soon as they do what I want I lose interest and walk away.

Fortunately with modern technology that also means that a few months of not touching it in any capacity will cause it to require a new round of tweaking. Except this time the internet guides will be out-of-date.
