Sorry to bring current events here, but my usual way of bringing retro comfort in stressful situations is to have a Twitter feed running on my C64. The tweets are clearly coming from the 80s so it's not that bad.

I used a cassette adapter until 2016 or so when the tape deck in my car broke and I had a new stereo head out in. Then I got a new car in ‘19 and Toyota was on the verge of putting Android Auto in cars, but never went back and did my model year. Which made me switch to iPhone last year to get back the level of functionality I had with my aftermarket stereo head in a 2003 car.

This is why the greatest thing a carmaker can offer is a good ol' DIN/Double DIN slot. Their own offerings are either overpriced, terrible, or rapidly outdated (no AUX, Bluetooth but only for calls, never updated satnav maps, etc etc).

The new Citroen Ami coming with nothing but a phone holder is amazingly appealing.

They make those android car radios with face plates for a fair number of different vehicles but I doubt you can fit them to modern cars with screens all over the dashboard and no dedicated car stereo.

It made an awesome upgrade for my 2010 golf with canbus integration, bluetooth handsfree, carplay, reverse camera and wide choice of GPS navigation apps.

What model is that? I've never heard of one with canbus integration, is that connecting to your ODB2 port so you can get telemetry?

I got a bluetooth dongle hooked up to the obd2 port so i can have a big dumb turbo boost gauge in the dashboard with the Torque app but it's kinda unreliable, the canbus integration works a lot better and is built into the android image but doesn't give you all the fun engine stats that obd2 does.
Unfortunately my car has a plain steering wheel without buttons so I lose out on the best reason to have canbus support in the first place :(

With my car is really sucked cos the standard infotainment also has the HVAC controls. AerPro do a module specific enough for me luckily, and I could put any Double DIN slot stereo I wanted:

My parents have had a car with CarPlay in it for two years, and just spent literal hours of their life getting the lovely onboard nav updated with maps more recent than 2018, including buying a USB drive with the updates on them because the car refused to stay connected to their Wifi to do an OTA update.

They know they have CarPlay. They just don’t like it because…I don’t know, they were exposed to leaded gasoline as children or something?

I’m not really sure why all car infotainment systems have to be eye-searing, unstable, unresponsive garbage fires, but they seem to be a rake auto manufacturers are more than happy to step on.

Yup, best thing I did for my 2009 Subaru Forester was replace the infotainment system.

It was a real rabbit warren of spaghetti, the factory reversing camera needed a 12V -> 6V converter, and I can't get any vehicle stats on fuel consumption etc, but at least now I'm not stuck with maps from 2009 and a CD player that constantly jammed.

Steering wheel controls are a little hit and miss sometimes but otherwise all good.

My ‘19 RAV4 went to a proprietary stereo head which is part of what made it so frustrating when Toyota couldn’t decide if they were going to retroactively support Android Auto for the model year or not. Eventually they didn’t do I switched to iPhone which was ultimately fine.

My mom has an Outback and they ditched even more buttons in favor of screens, and so much poo poo is a couple of menus deep. I’d hate that if I had to drive it all the time.

Yeah I got a BMW rental recently (turns out fwd BMWs are the cheapest rentals in Detroit) and while some things annoyed me (skipping tracks on Bluetooth took 2 button presses?) the little nav wheel was great compared to a touchscreen.

The Nissan integration with Android has been solid in the recent Nissans I've driven. Even automatically launches VLC on my phone and picks up on the last track I was playing.

Here it is. It's very simple.

https://github.com/sauhir/twit

To use it you need to get API tokens from https://developer.twitter.com/

Then copy config.js.example to config.js and fill the details.

Run "node app.js" and you will get instructions for the command line parameters.

Oh and you need to run "npm install" first to install the dependencies.

Finally, the perfect Twitter client! :toot:

I gotta say, getting Wifi to play nice on Windows 98 is a nightmare. The software is rear end (have to us McAfee Wireless Security to even connect easily), and Windows can't grab a proper IP address half the time. Though that latter part might be because I'm connecting to an AP router, and sometimes it tries to pull a subnet IP address instead of a regular one.

Finally dug out my old 1541, that was stored in a cold chicken house for over a decade, then on my cold veranda for... maybe a decade. Opened it up to do a cursory bug cum mouse piss check and it seemed pretty clean - no rust or anything either!

So now it can sit in my heated spare room for a decade or so!

The 1541 is a beast. Has its own built in power supply and weighs more than the actual computer.

The 1541-II upgrade got a lot smaller and changed to an external power brick.

And the interesting thing about the C64 disk drives is that they have the same CPU as the C64 as a disk controller. And they were still the slowest drives in the market!

Anyway back to the boxes'o'stuff on the veranda. Found a hand-held "football" game too, the kind with only red LEDs that represent...something. No-one ever knew how to play it because it's American football. I wonder if it makes sense to people who know the rules.
