The problem with going gloves off is that you're giving your opponent the excuse to do the same.

Putin justifies his choices in whatever terms he feels like. I wouldn't be surprised if he chose them from a dart throw half the time. In the mind of the strongman, power means not needing to justify one's actions, and providing an obviously preposterous justification serves to mock anyone that would argue that your actions require justification.

Despite that it would be proper, no one will face a war crimes tribunal for this unless the current regime completely collapses. It's not a valid legal argument as it's still clearly a civillian population which is fired upon indiscriminately, but the legality is irrelevant at this point. However Russia spins it domestically, it would be very hard to overcome Kiev looking like Grozny by just propaganda. Kiev is a very well known city (and tourist destination) in eastern (and western) europe.

Also a talked a bit with my father about this since we are reading vastly different sources - both Pro-Ukrainian, but very different otherwise - and he was surprised that Marco Rubio was the talk piece of the US goverment. Like there is huge message disaplice behind the tweets, but having the Republican co-chair do it just seems werid.
