Jason Thompson gave the manga a zero-star rating in his review of the series in his Manga: The Complete Guide, calling it "Actual pornography disguised as romantic comedy pseudo-pornography".[2] Stig Hogset gave the anime a one-star review on THEM Anime reviews, calling it "one of the most exploitative, demeaning anime titles I have ever seen".[1] He went on say that "Eiken is like an hour-long nightmare of sexual innuendo of the creepy kind... you'll never find a bigger collection of 'wrong' anywhere else."[1]

It's directly aiming at the reactionary tendency to meet violence with violence. I came back to watch the whole thing and noticed that Season 4 didn't factor in to his analysis at all, which is always a bad call for a story like AoT with so many recontextualizing twists & turns. But the basement reveal had already well established that there's a historicity to the story that goes much deeper than a meditation on the reptilian brain or man's inherent evil nature or whatever. From a moral standpoint they're as innocent as predator animals. The true horror of the world can't be understood until its social context is revealed. He's heading in the right direction with how the story approaches the concept of freedom, but he's not able to recognize how freedom relates to every character at the social level. Eren seeks freedom because he resents having restrictions placed on him, whereas Armin recognizes that the world has to be negotiated with for everyone to be "free." Otherwise freedom is a contest between powerful individuals to assert their will over others, which is a well established theme in all the historical flashbacks. This is part of how anti-politics leads people to view all problems as individualistic concerns of psychoanalysis. Like the real problem with history is our reptilian brain, and not the measured and calculated rationale of realpolitik. There are limits to reason that have to be overcome with higher ideals, and you can't simply engage with the world as it is but must also think of what the world should be. looking back on it the ending is very much reminiscent of Starship Troopers (Verhoeven adaptation). there's sooooo many aspects to ymirs backstory that are problematic to say the very least (does Hajime just not know what Stockholm Syndrome means or?...) regardless i very much enjoyed his take on the trolley problem BornAPoorBlkChild has issued a correction as of 03:43 on Feb 28, 2022 |

Ranking out Kings is so good and all the characters have interesting depth and motivations and the animation is gorgeous and there's intrigue and everything was awesome and gently caress yeah, get 'em Bojji! ... And then it turns out that the inciting incident of the plot was "and it all started with this group of people who were simply irredeemable sadistic scum who backstabbed their allies and mutilated children for little to no reason." I'm still on board, but that's a surprisingly sharp turn for a series that formerly went to a lot of effort to humanize almost every character.

Maybe i'll eat poo poo, but my guess is that gods or the demon guy were involved and made them act that way for some reason, and will hopefully get Nietzsche'd to the face

The thing that has to be kept in mind about her is because her tongue was cut out as a thrall she's been robbed of any ability to communicate or express any real agency. After she got the titan powers, from her perspective King Fritz was giving her everything she could've dreamed of. Respect, power, praise, a family. She only gives up on life knowing that he never stopped seeing her as anything more than a tool - but she is still bound in service to their dynasty according to the values she was raised with and had beaten into her. The fact that her self image in the Paths dimension is still that of a child means she was developmentally stunted from the experience of slavery. It's not exactly out of left field, is what I'm getting at. Those sort of relationships occurred all the time throughout history. I don't think Isayama is unaware of how hosed up the whole master/slave dynamic is.
