It's quick and semi-AFK-able, and usually gives out something decent, but its not spectacular.

I've been mucking around with a fresh alt, and either A Step Between Stars is bugged or I'm missing something. With the new way environmental suits work, they're supposed to automatically activate when I enter an area that needs one. But in the spacewalk portion of this mission, I just die when entering the corridor. The suit only appears during the death animation.

Yep cryptic doesn't bother updating old missions so now you have to manually swap to your EVA suit in your character's status window.

Maybe you activated it too quickly after separating? There's a stupid long animation lock for saucer separation and similar skills, like 4-5 seconds more than the actual animation, and that definitely affects other animation-inducing skills. Of course it's far more likely to just be a new Cryptic bug. :v:

Nah, when you sep, rock'n'roll goes into a ten-second cooldown while the animation plays, and then stays greyed out after that ends, no matter how long passes, until you rejoin.

(Speaking of animations, I notice they've hosed up the rejoining animation too, it doesn't play, the saucer just snaps back into existence attached)

For those not keeping track, it looks like the big twitter mystery announcement relates to the fact that a bunch of the cryptic designers got to do some work on Picard, or Picard may use a cryptic design? So maybe the Odyssey on screen? If so, good for them

Unrelated, but I think my heart has softened enough that I might give Disco another chance. I’d probably just jump to season 3 though. What little I’ve heard still sounds not great and not my ideal trek, but at least it’s fully out of the shadow of season 1?

There is a plot twist in Season 3 that makes Season 1 look like loving Peak Quality Trek. I'm not making GBS threads to say that the future-disco poo poo makes the S1 Klingon War stuff look like quality on par with DS9's Dominion War arc.

I'll spoil in case you really want to go in but after they go to the future they discover that warp travel is now impossible because of an earlier catastrophe known as "the burn" that destroyed all the diliuthium using ships in the galaxy and I think most of the natural dilithium too.

So that basically caused the fall of galactic civilization and Disco gets to basically do a ST-flavored version of that old Andromeda show, which is actually kind of funny because that was a Gene Rodenberry thing too and iirc he wanted to make it Trek to begin with.

Anyway, the really stupid thing about all this is that when they find out what caused the giant catastrophe it's a Kelpian child - yes a Kelpian - who had an emotional meltdown and destroyed all dilithium in the galaxy with the power of their feelings. That's not a joke, that's 100% true. Here's the Memory Alpha page on it, so full loving spoiler territory there.

It's literally the worst, dumbest, most insane, laziest piece of writing Star Trek has ever seen ,and that's loving saying something. The people who wrote classic gems like Crusher having sex with a ghost or Janeway's time slug baby or even the S1 and S2 disco writers are just standing back in awe, bowing to the true masters of self destructive schlock.

There's a lot of little things I genuinely like about Disco and so I've stuck with it. The writing is loving terrible though, ever season is just one big arc built around the absolute stupidest ideas. Season 4 has been Starfleet vs Horrendous Space Kablooie vs Every character acting like complete morons at all times for extra drama.

For all the poo poo Voyager gets it still occasionally managed a really great episode but Disco and Picard are too serialised to manage that since everything ties into the main arc and the main arc has been monumentally stupid every time. Like take the dumbest Voy ep and at least it's over and done with in 45 minutes. Disco would take "oops we went too fast now we're lizards" and make it a season long arc.

The worst part of all that crap for me is that dilithium isn't even needed for warp travel! It regulates the matter-antimatter reaction and that's it! Romulans used artificial singularities to power their ships! Fuckers can't even attempt internal consistency.

There was also that TNG episode where they learn that warp travel damages subspace that they've never addressed again. They could have called back to that for a 30 years latter payoff and a not completely stupid reason for warp travel to stop working.

Actually that episode was why Voyager had swingy nacelles, it was supposed to be better for subspace.

Voyager had swingy nacelles because they wanted something that moved so it would look dynamic, and then they retrofitted that explanation on in background material but it was never said on-screen.

As someone who liked Andromeda too, Disco is so, so much worse.

I mean, the first 3 seasons of Andromeda in particular are really loving good sci fi, and can stand up there with the better Trek seasons and most of B5. Saying you like Andromeda so you'll be fine with Disco S3 is like assuming USDA school lunch pizza product will be great because you enjoyed what you ate in Naples.

Captain Dylan Hunt a new galaxy needs you.

Agreed Andromeda has aged a bit (CGI is maybe better than B5 and Lexx but of that era) however the early stuff is very well written. Worth picking up the DVDs of season 1 from a bargain bin if nothing else.

Der Kyhe

I always thought that the S1 DISCO stuff with the Klingon-Federation war was OK as an overall story, but the Klingon redesign with that scaled and bold lizard look and bat-themed ships looked stupid, and it was a good thing they walked that back a bit on the second season.

And yeah S3 dear god, great job forgetting that one of the Big 3 does not actually use dilithium, or matter/antimatter reactors. And like said, that wasn't even the most stupid part of the season. Besides the one mentioned earlier, my personal favorite is that the big reveal at the end of S2 makes everything, absolutely everything else a prequel show from now on, and DISCO just stamps everything with it's stupid "does not matter, everything goes to poo poo in the next ~600 years". The best thing that show could do is use it's final season to do another timeline shenanigans storyline, making the DISCO never take place at all, or sell it clearly as a separate timeline from everything else starting S2E1 or so.

Its like they again started to hire only writers who had no idea what Star Trek is and never bothered to read the reference materials.

Look one of the red angel episodes mentions that until someone used the suit, Michael was dead, so clearly the real Star Trek takes places in a Michaelless timeline.

It's a bit of a shame because I've actually come around on a couple of the 32nd century designs. I'm considering the Saturn for my meta reward this year, or maybe the Mars. I don't think they look like Starfleet ships, but I've warmed to them in their own right.

Those two, the Valkis (since I wound up not getting it with last year's), and the Tadaari are all on my short list for this year's meta.
